The Importance of Rest for High-Achieving Women

The Importance of Rest for High-Achieving Women

In a world that glorifies busyness, high-achieving women are frequently caught in a relentless cycle of work, responsibility, and the unyielding pressure to perform. It can be exhausting. For years, I fit the mold—always busy, constantly juggling many tasks, convinced that I needed to complete my work before allowing myself any leisure. This mindset is common among ambitious women who strive to excel in their careers while managing personal responsibilities. However, through my journey and a pivotal reading experience with Alex Soojung-Kim Pang’s Rest*, I discovered a liberating truth: rest is not a luxury but an essential component of sustained success and well-being.

?

The Misconception of Busyness

?

1. Cultural Narrative: Society often equates busyness with worth. The narrative that you must be constantly productive is particularly pervasive among ambitious women, pushing us to believe that taking time to rest is a sign of weakness or lack of commitment.

?

2. The Illusion of Productivity: Engaging in perpetual work may feel like progress, but it can lead to burnout and diminished productivity. When we allow ourselves to be constantly busy, we risk becoming overwhelmed, resulting in subpar work and impaired creativity.

?

3. The Creativity of the Endless To-Do List: The to-do list will never truly end. New tasks will constantly emerge, and the satisfaction of crossing an item off is often fleeting. This realization can be liberating. Letting go of the need to complete everything is the first step towards embracing rest.

?

The Science of Rest

?

In Rest, Alex Soojung-Kim Pang presents compelling evidence to support the importance of rest. This research highlights several key points:

?

1. Boosts Creativity: Studies creativity that resting allows your mind to process and consolidate ideas. Moments of unstructured thinking often lead to innovative breakthroughs.

?

2. Enhances Performance: Athletes often know this instinctively; rest and recovery are fundamental to peak performance. Similarly, for high-achieving professionals, regular rest intervals can directly correlate with heightened focus and productivity.

?

3. Promotes Mental Health: Chronic stress without adequate recovery can lead to burnout, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. Rest provides the necessary breathing room to maintain emotional stability and resilience.

?

Strategies for Embracing Rest

?

As high-achieving women, prioritizing rest may feel counterintuitive, but implementing structured strategies can pave the way for a healthier work-life balance:

?

1. Schedule Downtime: Just as you would schedule meetings or essential tasks, set aside specific times for rest. Treating rest as a non-negotiable appointment can help you prioritize it in your busy life.

?

2. Practice Mindfulness: Engage in activities that allow you to be present, such as meditation, yoga, or mindful walking. These practices can reduce stress and improve overall mental clarity.

?

3. Limit Screen Time: In today’s age, it's easy to get caught up in screens. Designate tech-free periods to allow your brain to rejuvenate and avoid the fatigue accompanying constant connectivity.

?

4. Engage in Leisure Activities: Find hobbies or interests that bring you joy, whether painting, hiking, or reading leisurely. These pursuits offer a break from work and foster personal growth and fulfillment.

?

5. Encourage a Restful Culture: Advocate for a healthier work environment that promotes rest for everyone. Encourage discussions around work-life balance and be a role model by taking your needed breaks.

?

As high-achieving women, we must acknowledge the profound impact that rest has on our professional performance, personal satisfaction, and overall health.

?

Embracing rest is not just about stepping back from our responsibilities; it’s about recognizing that our well-being is intricately linked to our ability to perform at our best.

?

After reading Rest, my journey has fundamentally transformed my approach to work and personal life, allowing me to flourish rather than merely survive.

?

Remember, permitting yourself to rest is empowering, leading to individual well-being and tremendous success in every endeavor.

?

Rest is a powerful ally in our quest for achievement.

Well said Rachelle. It is a great reminder. There is always age for every high achiever to slow down and there is no debate about this. When I used to be a Clinical Social Worker for Hospice Africa Uganda, they used to do regularly Assessments of Staff on different Aspects of life. In one of the Assessments, the feedback to me was that in my 40s, I would slow down and would be strictly do stuff of passionate about. A similar Assessment was repeated in 2017 by a different organisation using a Consultancy Firm. I was given results which resonated with the 1st Assessment. As I respond to you Rachelle, I have slowed down, I prioritise self care and love and strictly apply for jobs that align with my career goals and passion. I now have more lone time than ever, spend more time with my kids, and surround myself with friends and family members who prioritise positive energy and shun busy body talks. Kudos again for this insightful reminder.

I absolutely agree with everything you say although sometimes when I do take time for downtime I feel guilty because my to-do list is rambling through my head. I'm trying to get over that!
