The Importance of Representation: More Than a Side Note

I want to share an experience that profoundly resonated with me, underscoring the vital importance of representation in our everyday lives.?

Recently, I visited the Nike website, and for the first time, I felt truly at home.

?This wasn't just about seeing stylish apparel and cutting-edge athletic gear; it was about seeing myself and my community represented in a way that I had never experienced before.

For instance, I saw black pregnant women featured prominently. Until that moment, I realised I had never seen a black pregnant model in mainstream media.?

This was a revelation. Representation in this context felt empowering and affirming. It made me recognise the often-overlooked fact that inclusivity in media and advertising can make a profound difference in how we see ourselves and our place in the world.

Furthermore, the website showcased women with visible disabilities and various differences, all confidently wearing Nike products.?

These were not the polished, unattainable ideals we are so accustomed to seeing, but real, diverse individuals who reflect the true breadth of human experience.

?Even something as simple as seeing a "normal" person wearing Nike trainers reinforced the power of inclusivity.

This experience reminded me why representation must be a core, ongoing commitment within every organisation.?

It cannot be a side project or a token effort; it must be an integral part of how we operate and communicate.?

Because of this newfound connection, I am now more inclined to purchase from Nike and remain loyal to the brand, despite not being a regular trainer wearer before.?

Their commitment to representation has inspired me to support their products and mission.

This brings me to another point of pride and joy: the success of my 8 year daughter Eliyanah's comic book, which has made it to the best-seller list.?

This is adding more representation on our bookshelves whether in schools, libraries, or homes and plays a critical role in shaping a more inclusive world.?

Seeing characters and authors from diverse backgrounds allows readers to understand and appreciate different perspectives, fostering empathy and unity.

I am especially proud of my 8-year-old for her remarkable achievement with her best-selling book.?

Her success is a testament to the impact that diverse voices can have when given the platform they deserve.

So, where do we need to see more representation?

?The answer is everywhere.?

In media, advertising, literature, leadership positions, and beyond.?

Representation should permeate all aspects of society, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background or identity, feels seen, valued, and included.

I strongly urge us all to champion this cause within our own spheres of influence and advocate for comprehensive representation that reflects the rich diversity of our world.

?Only then can we create an environment where everyone feels truly at home.
