The importance of recognition

The PSR annual conference is an opportunity for us to review performance, reconnect with goals and values, and most importantly, recognise individuals and teams that have achieved outstanding performance.

It is always a stressful few weeks in the run-up to the annual PSR conference. Attention to detail is critical given the increase in head count since my first conference of just 20 staff, compared to the 85 in attendance in 2018, planning and logistics become pivotal.

Day-to-day recruitment life is tough, ask any recruiter who regularly experiences the highs and the inevitable lows.

This year, I opened the conference with an extract from the visionary company, Hewlett Packard to set the scene. This formed a good platform to talk wider to the staff about why PSR exists in the first place. I wanted to encourage some creative thought about the values we uphold as an organisation that stretch beyond mere financial incentive, and rather toward providing an excellent service, to make a difference to people’s careers and lives.  Using the conference theme of 'Together we're Better', I reinforced the power of the collective; the ability to achieve something together what we could not achieve individually.

Following the conference, we went all out to recognise our staff in the now coveted PSR annual awards.

Our black-tie event forms the basis of the evening, which aims to recognise staff from all areas of the business from support, to sales, to our rising stars and to those excelling on social media.

Using an Oscars style format, we showcase pre-recorded videos of team managers discussing why they think the various nominees should be in with a chance at scoring a trophy. The atmosphere in the room this year, as always, was electric! Progressing through the awards, the emotion on display by all, really compounded how vitally important recognition from peers is to our team members

In an emotional speech, the winner of the Employee of the Year award, a visibly shocked Alex Peat thanked his team, the staff and the business for giving him this opportunity.  It was moving to see his team mob him as he exited the stage and the Together we're Better couldn’t have been more patently played out as it was right at that moment for all to see.

The benefits to the business we have witnessed since the launch of the PSR awards have been numerous; from increased individual productivity, greater employee satisfaction, deeper loyalty, better teamwork, and on the flip side we’ve also tracked lower rates of absenteeism and stress levels.

All of this serves a real reminder that recognised employees are happy and loyal employees!

PSR’s award-winning construction recruitment specialists are committed to helping each of our candidates find their dream job. Contact us in confidence, register or send us your CV and let’s get started.
