The Importance of Questioning Skills in Artificial Intelligence Systems
Today, while working on an activity with my daughter Deniz, I planned an activity different from our usual routine. Instead of me asking questions and her answering, I wrote the answers and she found the questions. It took us a few minutes to grasp this reverse logic, but eventually, this visual work emerged.
This made me realize that despite having many answers in the systems we use, it is a fact that we cannot reach them without asking the right questions. Thus, I wanted to write about why questioning skills are important.
"The smartest people emphasize the importance of constantly asking the right questions. Because the right questions are more valuable than the right answers." - Albert Einstein
In today's world, artificial intelligence (AI) systems are used by millions of users every day, handling billions of queries. For example, Google’s AI-powered search engine processes approximately 8.5 billion queries per day (Google, 2023). Moreover, approximately 5 billion people globally regularly use various AI platforms (Statista, 2024). This intense usage highlights how critical effective questioning skills are in AI systems.
As AI technology rapidly develops, the efficiency and effectiveness of these systems depend on integrating many different competencies. Among these competencies, one of the most critical is questioning skills. According to a study, effective questioning skills can increase the efficiency of AI systems by 40% (McKinsey, 2024). Questioning enhances AI systems' access to information, learning capacity, and interaction capability. Let’s first evaluate how questioning skills benefit AI systems and then explore what exactly happens in our brains during the questioning process.
Benefits of Questioning Skills to AI Systems
Questioning allows AI systems to gain deeper insights. For instance, a chatbot must ask the right questions to effectively communicate with the user. This improves the user experience and ensures the system provides accurate responses (Benedict, 2020). Additionally, AI systems can enhance their self-learning processes by asking the right questions. For example, machine learning algorithms can identify missing data or information gaps, gather more data in these areas, and optimize learning processes (Smith & Kosslyn, 2018). Moreover, questioning helps AI systems make more informed decisions. In healthcare, for instance, AI systems can ask the right questions about patients to make more accurate diagnoses and suggest treatment plans (Jiang et al., 2017).
What Happens in Our Brain During Questioning?
When a questioning process occurs in our brain, various brain regions become active. Research shows that particularly the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus play a critical role in this process. The prefrontal cortex is responsible for complex cognitive processes, planning, and decision-making, while the hippocampus is associated with memory and learning.
Prefrontal Cortex: During the questioning process, the prefrontal cortex performs functions of analyzing information and making logical connections. This region identifies which information is missing and helps develop strategies on how to obtain this information (Miller & Cohen, 2001).
Hippocampus: The hippocampus becomes active in the process of storing existing information in memory and retrieving it when necessary. During questioning, the hippocampus reconstructs learned information and connects it with new information (Eichenbaum, 2017).
People’s reasoning and connection-making abilities enhance their capacity to make sense of complex information and establish relationships with new information. Research by Hogarth and Soyer (2023) examined how questioning skills affect critical thinking and decision-making processes. This research showed that individuals who can ask the right questions process information more effectively and make more accurate and informed decisions. A 2024 article published in the AI and Society Journal discusses how integrating questioning skills into AI systems can improve organizational decision-making processes (Davenport & Kirby, 2024).

Summary
The development of questioning skills offers various advantages for both organizations and individuals. AI systems capable of asking the right questions can help organizations become more innovative and competitive, while individuals who develop questioning skills can distinguish themselves in their careers. The LinkedIn Skills Report published in 2024 emphasizes that questioning and critical thinking skills play a critical role in career development.
Questioning skills in AI systems play a critical role in enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of these technologies. Academic research and reports published in 2023-2024 show how this skill improves AI systems' access to information, learning capacity, and decision-making abilities. From a neuroscience perspective, the effects of the questioning process on the brain further underscore the importance of this skill. I would like to conclude my writing by emphasizing the importance of raising individuals who ask effective questions and reason among answers to access more and more meaningful sources.
