In today’s fast-paced world, many women wear their “busy-ness” like a badge of honor. It’s almost as if sleeping only 4-5 hours a night is a testament to their strength and capability, a symbol of their ability to juggle countless responsibilities and still come out on top. But at what cost? The culture of self-sacrifice, where health and wellbeing take a backseat to productivity, is not sustainable. Even Wonder Woman needs her rest.

The Myth of the Superwoman: The idea that working long hours and sacrificing sleep makes us more productive and successful is a myth. In reality, chronic sleep deprivation and neglecting self-care can lead to serious health issues, including burnout, anxiety, depression, and a weakened immune system. The “Superwoman” persona is not just unrealistic; it’s damaging.

The Airplane Oxygen Mask Rule: One of the most powerful analogies for self-care is the “airplane oxygen mask” rule: put your own mask on first before helping others. This principle applies to everyday life. If you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t have the energy, focus, or health to take care of others or to achieve your goals. Self-care is not selfish; it’s essential.

The Importance of Sleep: Sleep is a critical component of self-care. It’s during sleep that our bodies repair themselves, our minds process the day’s events, and our energy reserves are replenished. Without adequate sleep, our cognitive functions, mood, and overall health suffer. It’s time to shift the narrative and recognize that prioritizing sleep and self-care is a sign of strength and wisdom, not weakness.

Self-Care: A Path to Success: Making health and wellness a priority is not just about avoiding illness; it’s about thriving. When we are well-rested and healthy, we are more creative, focused, and productive. We can set and achieve ambitious goals and contribute meaningfully to the world. True success is not measured by how much we can endure but by how well we can take care of ourselves while pursuing our dreams.

I think a lot of people believe that they’re practicing self-care, but actually, I’m not consistent with it. I think the first thing is to be conscious of how much self-care you need every day!
