The Importance of Preschool Active Play

The Importance of Preschool Active Play

All individuals need some physical activity each day, whether it be walking the dog, a trip to the gym or a game of pickleball with friends. Research has shown that consistently engaging in physical activity boosts mood, builds confidence, improves sleep quality and lowers the risk of developing some forms of diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

For preschoolers and toddlers, the importance of physical activity is even greater. A study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine tracked the physical activity levels of a group from toddler years to middle childhood. The study showed that toddlers who were more physically active at a young age developed into children (ages 6 to 12 years) who were active, while the toddlers who were less physical active remained physically inactive in middle childhood.

The study concluded that “early childhood should be targeted as a critical time to promote healthy lifestyle behaviors through methodologically sound prevention studies.”

How much active play should preschoolers be participating in each day? The American Heart Association recommends children ages 3 to 5 years engage in active play and structured movement for about three hours per day.

Outdoor Play

Activity in the great outdoors remains one of the most beneficial forms for individuals of any age. Just being in nature has benefits like lower stress and anxiety levels and improved cognitive function. Preschoolers and toddlers should have outdoor play time each day to run, play, imagine and explore.

While free play has its many advantages, young children also enjoy play equipment and outdoor games like GaGa Ball, hopscotch, ride-on toys and climbers.

Sand and water tables are a great activity for preschoolers because they engage a variety of senses? while keeping kids active and entertained.

Foam Climbers

Sometimes factors like the weather, safety and space prevent outdoor play. There are plenty of indoor activities that keep kids moving, including foam climbers.

Foam climbers can be arranged in a variety of formations and offer challenges in a safe play environment. Foam climbers are covered with vinyl so they are easy to wipe clean and disinfect. Schools In offers a great selection of foam climbers for children of any age.

Stay in Motion

Keeping kids physically active keeps adults active, too. Play catch, take a nature walk, ride bicycles together, learn a new dance or anything to stay moving. Remember, the more preschoolers move today predicts how much they will move in the future.
