An very insightful article about givers vs takers vs matchers in the workplace
Sometimes it is very hard at maintaining a productive and positive culture in the workplace
I have found that training your staff on recognising diversity in the workplace by understanding mindfulness techniques and been able to identify and manage different individual personality traits, it should create a more emphatic team of willing contributors focussed on helping each other.
Management is the first key in implementing this by ensuring this training should be made mandatory, with familiarisation sessions held every year (or at more regular intervals) to remind staff on the company's commitment to continual improvement and to train any new staff who join the organisation.
This should also be followed up by conducting anonymous monthly employee feedback surveys focussing questions about culture, team performance and continual improvement and confirming the department the employee works in.
If the employee feedback survey score is low it provides the opportunity for management to raise these issues with their relevant department/s at daily team scrum meetings to work collaboratively to handle any issues and nip them in the bud early to avoid and negative impacts on the company culture.
The benefits cannot be underestimated including increased morale and teamwork and preventing employee burnout and staff turnover. Also it gives the opportunity for any employees who have identifiable “Taker” characteristics to modify their behaviour.
And let’s be honest here, the personality traits of each individual is in most instances from mental conditioning from personal learned experiences. Unfortunately not everyone is lucky enough to have been given the opportunity to have the best life experience. But this doesn’t mean they can learn new skills, improve/modify their behaviour and become a vital member of the team, or in the worst case provide a opportunity for management to have a constructive discussion with the affected employees about transitioning out of the business.
So why am I taking the time to write this article? Well the answer is very simple and that is I have had the opportunity to work for businesses that have a very strong continual improvement culture and I have had first hand experience in how this can create a positive and productive work environment including participating in and taking leadership in continual improvement projects.
