The Importance of Planning: Knowing Where You’re Going
There’s a moment in Alice in Wonderland when Alice reaches a fork in the road and asks the Cheshire Cat which path to take. The Cat replies, “That depends a lot on where you want to go.” Alice, not particularly concerned, says, “I don’t much care where.” The Cat’s response? “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.”
This exchange highlights the critical importance of having a clear direction. Without a destination in mind, any path can seem acceptable. But when you know where you want to go—whether in your personal life or professionally—planning becomes essential to reaching your goals.
As we transition from the slower pace of summer into the focused energy of fall, I always experience a renewed sense of purpose and drive. In my family of three boys, this shift is about setting new goals for the school year—whether it’s academic achievements, athletic milestones, or new challenges like student government, the school play, or the yearbook. We don’t leave things to chance. We make sure we know where we want to end up and plan accordingly.
