Being a business owner is exciting and fulfilling, but it can also be overwhelming. There are days when the small details seem to pile up, and frustration takes over. I am someone who often gets caught up in the perfection of things. When I decide to do something, I want it done now. The idea of having to wait or go through a slow process is challenging. However, over time, I have realized that this approach can lead to more stress and burnout. Patience is not just a virtue but a necessary ingredient for success in business.
In this piece, I want to share my personal experience as a business owner who has struggled with the urge to have everything done perfectly and immediately. I'll also talk about how learning to slow down and allow things to happen naturally has been essential for my growth as an entrepreneur.
The Frustrations of Being a Perfectionist
As a business owner, I take pride in my work and the things I create. Whether it’s a new product line, a blog post, or something as simple as answering emails, I always want everything to be just right. The issue with being a perfectionist is that it can make you more sensitive to the little things that don't go according to plan. A small typo or a delayed shipment can become a huge source of frustration.
There are days when I find myself focusing too much on details that may not even matter in the bigger picture. Instead of moving forward, I get stuck in the loop of "fixing" things, which only adds to my stress. For example, when launching a new product, I want every aspect to be flawless—from the packaging to the marketing. But the reality is, things don’t always go as planned. There are times when I’ve had to re-do an entire project because something wasn't perfect. While striving for excellence is important, being overly focused on perfection can slow down progress.
The Desire for Immediate Results
Another challenge I face is my desire to see immediate results. When I have an idea or task in mind, I want to see it completed quickly. This mindset can lead to impatience. I often ask myself, "Why isn't this done yet?" or "Why is this taking so long?"
In business, many things take time. Whether it's building a customer base, developing a product, or creating marketing strategies, these tasks don’t happen overnight. But when you are someone who likes to see things done quickly, the waiting game can feel unbearable.
I’ve found myself rushing through projects just to meet deadlines, only to realize later that the quality wasn’t as good as it could have been. I’ve also become frustrated when things didn’t happen as fast as I wanted them to, whether it was reaching a sales goal or seeing growth in my business. This need for immediate results has, at times, taken away the joy of building something slowly and carefully.
The Realization: Things Take Time
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a business owner is that success doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a process that takes time, effort, and—most importantly—patience. While it’s tempting to rush and get everything done as quickly as possible, doing so often leads to mistakes, missed opportunities, and burnout.

I had to come to terms with the fact that good things take time to develop. Whether it's a new product, a marketing campaign, or a business relationship, rushing through the process often results in a less-than-perfect outcome. By slowing down and giving myself the space to breathe, I’ve been able to focus on the bigger picture.
Learning to trust the process has been a game-changer. When I stopped trying to force things to happen immediately, I noticed a shift. Projects began to flow more naturally, and I was able to enjoy the journey rather than stress about the end result. It’s important to understand that delays, setbacks, and slow progress are part of the business world. Instead of seeing these as failures, I now view them as opportunities to learn and grow.
