The Importance of Networking!

The Importance of Networking!

I just got back from TechBBQ in Copenhagen which was a great event. New connections, ideas and lots of startups that want to scale. So let's talk about networking and why it’s such a big deal, especially after the pandemic.

Why Networking Matters More Than Ever

Post-COVID, a lot of startups have embraced remote or hybrid work, but face-to-face connections still matter, probably now more than ever. Zoom calls are fine and can be very effective, but there’s something about meeting people in person that can make all the difference. If you’re not already doing this, you should be!

Tech Shows Like TechBBQ Make It Easy

If you’ve ever been to events like TechBBQ, you know that everyone’s there to network, so there’s no need to feel awkward about it. It’s basically expected. And when the event sets up pre-booked meetings, that’s even better. I was only there for one day but had 12 solid meetings, and it was super productive and fun!

It’s Not Just About Business Cards

Networking isn’t just about collecting business cards or LinkedIn connections. It’s about building real relationships. The people I met at TechBBQ weren’t just names on a list; they were potential partners, collaborators and some seriously inspiring people.?

Pick Your Events Wisely

Not all events are created equal. You want to go to the ones that fit your industry and goals. For startups Slush , SaaStr , Sifted and Websummit are great options. These shows could be goldmines for meeting the right people. I also find that small local events can be really fruitful so check out what's happening in your area.

My Tips for Crushing It at Networking Events:

  1. Prep Beforehand: Do some homework on attendees and set up meetings if you can. Go in with a plan.
  2. Follow Up: Don’t let those connections go cold. Shoot them a message afterward to keep things moving.
  3. Don’t Sell: Go in with the mindset of helping people and in the long run people will also help you.
  4. Be Real: Forget about “just business.” Be yourself, make a genuine connection, and the deals will come.

We live in a world of remote everything, but face-to-face meetings are still where relationships—and opportunities—really grow. Whether you’re a founder or just starting, getting out there and talking to people can be the key to taking your business to the next level.

What’s Next?

If you’re looking to grow your network, get to the next event and start making those connections. It’s not just about business leads—it’s about setting up your long-term success.

Nothing beats face-to-face meetings - either physical or digital meetings! I agree with you events like TechBBQ make networking easy, and even fun! Why was it fun? Because everyone was on the same page, everyone had the same will to meet other people and exchange experiences and knowledge. Surely deals were made. It's fun when everyone is open to this kind of exchange. It was lovely to meet you. I hope that we'll have other opportunities to talk. ??

Networking is where conversations start. It's where we make connections. It's where we win. One networking lunch in Stockholm gave me 3x more prospect conversations than 3 months of cold outreach. I'm working on a way to do this remotely, at scale. It won't replace in-person (nothing should!), but is effective in the weeks between events. Still a Work In Progress, but looks promising. Happy to share in the DMs!
