The Importance of Networking

Everyone talks about networking with other professionals all the time but why is it so important? Let's look at a few of the benefits and importance of networking as a professional.

  1. Building long term relationships with mutual benefits - When we connect with other professionals who we meet at different places even from other countries we can learn from each other and share experiences. The possibilities are endless, who knows you may even find a life partner while networking or be poached into your next desired job.
  2. Trading valuable information - As a professional when you network with others at a conference or networking event; you can gain valuable insight of best practices and values of other organizations that can help you make your organization a better work place or be more competitive in the industry.
  3. Gain new ideas - Networking with others can help generate new ideas and thought process. It helps you gain a unique perspective when you are brainstorming or discussing with others from different industries.
  4. Meet people at senior levels - You may just find yourself a mentor to coach and guide you into a leadership role via networking events. You will have the opportunity to get career advice on moving up the career ladder from a CEO or EVP of a reputable organization.
  5. Increase confidence - If you are a shy person or an introvert, networking can help you come out of your comfort zone and build your confidence. Start by talking about what matters to you, your passion or even hobbies depending on the events you are attending. This will help greatly in opening up and sharing about yourself.

You may want to consider joining a smaller group if you are new to networking or you can move into bigger networking events if you are confident with yourself. Either way, look at what you can offer to others at these networking events so that it will be a beneficial relationship for yourself and others.
