The importance of narrative in a resume
A lot of us think of resumes as a space where we describe it all. Everything that we have ever done or achieved. But the purpose of a resume is to ensure that we get the jobs we desire. Simply put, it is a marketing tool to enable us to achieve our desired goals.
But there are ways to think about our resumes. What if I told you to adopt storytelling techniques to write your resume?
These are some questions you can ask yourself.
1) For every role I have undertaken in my career, what were the challenges and how did I grow?
2) What lasting impact did I create in every workplace? What was tangible? How did I help my teammates? Did I work in cross-functional teams? What did that teach me about being a leader?
3) When I am structuring my CV, can I show progression and growth in each role? What can I mention so that the narrative holistically makes sense to the reader?
4) What are my overall skills and competencies and what are my skills and competencies in each role?
In the coming weeks, I will shed more light on storytelling and its importance within the context of a resume.
