The Importance of Music on Learning

The importance of music on development cannot be understated. It has been found to improve and stimulate brain development, help with the acquisition of literacy and numeracy skills, as well as provide an important structure for the child’s social, emotional and mental wellbeing.

At Kings Monkton School, all year 2 pupils get the chance to learn the violin during school hours. One hour every week a specialist violin tutor, provided by our exclusive music partner, International Music School Cardiff, visits Kings Monkton to teach the children in small groups.

The course starts in September each year and introduces basic musical concepts such as rhythm, improvisation and pitch alongside an introduction to the violin. Each pupil gets their own violin and throughout the year pupils progress to a level where they perform small pieces in groups as well as solo, if they wish. Opportunities for this are plenty with IMS Cardiff's regular termly showcases and our own concerts here at Kings Monkton.

It is through this initiative that we grow our musicians and orchestras of the future, as well as developing well rounded, resilient and happy young learners.

After the effects of the pandemic these initiatives are more important that ever. Music not only develops a sense of belonging and community, it also helps the child develop and understand intimacy, express their emotions in a safe and controlled environment, where they can release tension and pressure often beset them from the outside world. At Kings Monkton School we inspire children to be the best they can be.?
