Any process industry does have sub-process of sieving or sifting or separation. This call for selecting proper mesh to get unwanted product separated out and get right quality products or need to classify / grade the products as per different size range.
The most common method used in industry is to specify mesh count or mesh number. However, majority users of such mesh does not know that with particular mesh count, there are different opening mesh available in market due to different gauge of wire being used by mesh manufacturer while weaving the mesh. It can vary from batch to batch or manufacturer to manufacturer.
The best way to avoid mistakes and get consistent results in any kind of separator equipment being used is to provide mesh opening in micron. This allows supplier to chose the mesh near to that opening and customer gets quite precise sieving efficiency.
One more thing needs to be educated to customer is to provide the range of tolerance with the micron opening and they need to specify whether tolerance required is on higher side or lower side of the opening specified. If the product to be sieved is above the mesh and fines to be removed, it is always better to specify tolerance on higher side so that mesh opening might be bit higher but it ensures that no fine particles would go with product. Similarly if the product is under-size of the opening then tolerance should be given on lower side to that no oversize particle gets mixed with final product.
