The Importance of Mental Health and Its Connection to the Environment

Mental health significantly impacts every aspect of our lives. It is crucial for overall well-being. Research shows that a positive, green environment can enhance mental health. When we live in environments that are both uplifting and natural, our mental and physical health improve.

This connection is particularly significant in the disability sector, especially in the case of persons with intellectual disabilities. Maintaining the mental health of these individuals and their caregivers for special needs is vital. At Navkshitij, we are committed to the residential rehabilitation of persons with intellectual disabilities (PwIDs).

Our three residential units in Pune house 85 PwIDs and over 50 staff members. We prioritize the mental well-being of our special friends and our dedicated caregivers as caregivers play a critical role in providing quality care.

Navkshitij Initiatives for Mental Health:

  • Miyawaki Forest: We have developed a Miyawaki forest on our campus. This small green area, reserved for trees, animals, and birds, creates a serene environment with the natural sounds of chirping birds. Our staff members and special friends wake up to this natural melody every morning and start their day with a fresh mind.
  • Sports Ground: We maintain sports and recreational areas on every campus. Playing volleyball, cricket, and other outdoor games contributes to physical and mental well-being.
  • Gym: A well-equipped gym is available for both staff members and special friends; it promotes physical fitness and overall well-being of everyone.
  • Recreation Room: We have a small recreation room where residents can enjoy movies and matches together; this fosters social interaction and relaxation.
  • Kitchen Garden: Our kitchen garden and nursery provide opportunities for special friends to engage in agriculture work, which positively impacts their mental health.
  • Get-Togethers: We organize regular get-togethers for both staff members and special friends; it helps strengthen community bonds and enhances social well-being.
  • Quality Time Family: Navkshitij provides residential facilities to staff members, allowing them to spend quality time with their families after work hours. This arrangement mitigates the mental stress caused by long commutes and traffic congestion, a significant issue in Pune. By avoiding one to two hours of travel in traffic, staff members can better enjoy their time with their families. Besides, such an arrangement facilitates inclusive, integrated, community living for all concerned.

In conclusion, the initiatives at Navkshitij are more than just amenities; they are integral to our holistic approach to mental health. By creating a green, engaging, and supportive environment, we ensure that both our special friends and dedicated staff thrive, leading to a happier and healthier community.
