The Importance of Meeting IRL: Our Takeaways

Is meeting in real life really so important for remote companies?

LUCID has expanded a lot in the past few months- both geographically, and in our team! Being remote, one of the amazing benefits is the ability to work alongside people in different cities, provinces, and countries.?

Still, we love being able to meet and work together in person. Our bi-monthly teambuilders give us a chance to connect with everyone- including those who live and work abroad in places like Vancouver, Montréal, and the US!

Last month, LUCID had a full-fledged in-person team builder in the form of a hackathon with the tech team, finished off with an escape room event in Toronto that brought together the whole team.

Here are some key takeaways that we noticed from the IRL meetings we value so much:

  • Meeting in person helps boost team morale. It's a chance for everyone to connect on a personal level and really get to know each other outside of work- discussing topics from interests and hobbies to sharing funny stories that made everyone laugh.
  • It’s easier to feel like part of a team with regular IRL meetings. The tech team was able to collaborate in person for an entire week to complete a hackathon- they reached the Gold status in the end!
  • Getting away from screens for an extended period of time can really help people improve their work-life balance and to reset their mental health. Working together without our phones or laptops for over 90 minutes to work our way out of an escape room was truly a treat.
  • Face-to-face office time is helpful for planning big projects and make impactful decisions about company direction. Our founders and senior team members were able to meet at NEXT Canada to have a sit-down discussion about high-level and priority projects. It was a great opportunity for open discussion to get into the nitty gritty of LUCID’s core offerings!
  • We found it convenient to be able to get to know one another while all in the same place, with fewer distractions. As the LUCID team continues to grow, having face time with newer members was especially fun! During our dinner at Kinka Izakaya, we surely saw some familiar faces and were able to meet new ones!

We're fortunate to have the ability to work together online, but being able to meet in person with the entire LUCID team is always a delight for fostering a positive, human connection!
