Creating sustainable change in their productivity journey, enabling a better life-work harmony.

#TimeMapping is a great tool when your goal is to have an overarching understanding of what your work-life balance looks like.??

Time mapping is one step away from planning. It is the tool you use to create a correlation between the different tasks in your day or week and create an overarching image of what your productive week would look like.??

It is the step that ties all data you have captured in a time log and life in general. It is the step that makes sense of all your findings and helps you create a viable plan for how you will reach your goals.???

There are 2 ways to use it.

  1. As a supportive tool to the other ways of capturing time
  2. As a tool to create an image of your time without relying on time measuring methodologies.???

When you are using it as the next phase after collecting data through time logging and task tracking, time mapping becomes the connective between reality in numbers and your dreams. Without mapping out your time, you will only have numbers in relation to your tasks and times. This is the method that can tie all loose ends together.??

It is also a way to visualise your information and helps you make conscious decisions and priorities the right way.???

It can be the connection between your work life and your home life, and often it becomes the platform that helps you harmonise the relationship between work and family life.??

?According to Forbes Magazine - Brett Steenbarger mentions Time Maps are a powerful tool for a purposeful life - Forbes?
Unfortunately, my experience as a psychologist is that people use calendars for what they should do and often not for what they want to do. Yes, they might block off time for a dinner event or vacation, but rarely do calendars organise time for quality time with family, physical exercise, or stimulating personal pursuits. We use planners more often for life's shoulds than life's wants.?

It is an instigator to negotiate as to what is more important and how can you still stay on target.???

On the other hand, when used on its own it is a great tool to map out what would life look like in an ideal world. It helps you connect with your vision/ mission and dreams. When you are using it as a hypothetical tool, it becomes a great platform to help you figure out what is important to you and what are the non-negotiable things that need to fit in your world.??

The danger of using it without any pre-measured data though is, that you might end up making assumptions that have no real connection to the real world that you live in, and your time map will be of no use.??

Mastering Time Mapping

Using this method can be rewarding if you are very much out of your depth and uncomfortable in actually measuring what you do. Some Time Centric Archetypes need this method to avoid overwhelm to recognise which areas of their work need urgent attention, and to help them ease into connecting metrics with their KPIs to start on the road to better productivity.??

But what are the steps to use time mapping? ?

1. Start with a list of the things you assume you will have to do in order to get things done. ?

2. Make some educated guesses on how long things will take and ?

3. Start creating a visual image of the week or month trying to include all the things you have on your list, creating an ideal week.??

If you are using time mapping after having measured where your time goes, time mapping will focus on how you can fit all things that need to happen in your week. It is a game of negotiation and a play with numbers, keeping at front of mind your end goals.??

As you can see, time mapping has more than one face and it is up to you how will you use this method, but if you want to connect your minutes to your vision, then you will have to spend some time using time mapping.???

Stay tuned to learn more about your Time Centric Archetypes....
