Let's be honest, when I first started my business, I thought I was a total rockstar. Great product, awesome team, big dreams—what could go wrong??

Well, apparently a lot. I realized that as soon as I learned how important figuring out the market is!

Market research can be the difference between your company’s growth and success or downfall. That's why I want to share my story about how market research became the backbone of my business, and why it should be yours too!

Knowing your roots

The biggest mistake one can assume is? Believing they know everything about the market they’re entering. I made the same mistake!

It turns out that surface-level knowledge doesn't cut it to ace the business. To properly understand the market scene, you need to dig deep. So I implemented extensive market research to identify my target demographic and the ideal clients I wanted to contact.?

Here’s a quick checklist I used that can help you research as well:

I can't emphasize enough the value of paying attention to your customers! Getting honest feedback from potential users was a goldmine of information. It’s through focus conversation, I received valuable feedback that helped me improve my product.

So don’t hesitate! Reach out to potential clients via surveys, social media, or even in-person meetings. Ask questions that are open-ended and then actively listen to their responses. Their suggestions may result in product improvements you hadn’t imagined before!

Trial and error

Mostly, the majority of company decisions are based on predictions. For example, I might have assumed a given feature would be popular since I enjoyed it. Market research taught me to double-check my predictions before actually applying them.

I learned to validate the ideas with small experiments before committing to something huge. This step-by-step strategy saves both money and time and if something doesn't work, I can easily modify directions.

So, you should keep the same approach. Trial programs or smaller releases are useful for testing your ideas. Collect data, see how things progress, and modify your strategy based on what you discover.?

This not only decreases risks but also helps in the development of a business model able to handle any situation.

Planning and looking ahead

With an excellent basis of market research, I was able to develop a more realistic and targeted business plan. Knowing the size of the market, how much it could expand, and who my consumers were helped me define feasible objectives and milestones.?
