THE IMPORTANCE OF INTEGRITY

/in?teɡr?dē/
Noun
1.???The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. “She is known to be a woman of integrity.”
The word integrity comes from the Latin adjective integer, which means whole or complete. In this sense, wholeness is derived from the qualities of honesty and possessing a consistent character.
Those with integrity live by their deepest values; they are honest with everyone and always keep their word. This places integrity as a highly valued trait among leaders. Someone of high integrity is an asset to the workplace.
When you practice integrity, you are consistently honest and adhere to strong moral and ethical principles and values uncompromisingly. And whether you are working at your own business, in a small business, or in a large corporation, your integrity impacts you, your coworkers, your workplace, and the company culture. In the broadest sense, your integrity could affect the world. Think about that for a moment.
From an ethical standpoint, integrity is represented by honesty, truthfulness, and the accuracy of your actions. In the eyes of others, this translates to consistency, reliability, and trustworthiness. You are perceived as a person of ‘integrity” according to the values and beliefs you display to others.
Integrity is a quality, not a skill. But it is something that you can improve and develop over time if you are willing to put in the effort. Understanding the attributes of integrity is essential to assess your integrity quotient and make improvements if needed. Here are some of the vital characteristics:
Be Authentic
Embracing and developing your authentic self may take some work. Many of us have turned away from what is genuine to our true selves due to the many pressures of everyday modern life. I would suggest that it is a journey you may want to explore if you feel you are off track with your true authentic self. But for this discussion, let’s assume that you are at a job you enjoy and want to do well and add value to the organization.
So, why is being authentic important?
Authenticity inspires loyalty and engagement where your integrity, ethics, and morals are not questioned. We are drawn to authentic people because they exude trustworthiness and confidence. When you're being your true self, you inspire others to feel safe, sharing more of themselves. The quality or state of being authentic suggests reliability and promotes a feeling of genuineness. You are viewed as trustworthy—an asset to any organization.
Be Gracious
Those with integrity are gracious to others and are always willing to help. Assisting others brings joy. Part of being gracious comes from a place of feeling gratitude. When you come from a place of gratitude, you can see the good in others. In the workplace, you can appreciate the good that others do at their job.

When someone helps you, say “thank you.” Express your appreciation. At work, send an email that says “thanks” when someone has taken time from their busy day to help you. Mention their service at a meeting. Acknowledge their kindness, and you will be treated kindly in return.
Show Respect
Women of integrity demonstrate how they value their coworkers by treating them with respect. You indicate to others that you value their time by showing up to meetings prepared and on time and meeting your project deadlines. Think before you speak. If you disagree with someone, take time to consider their point of view before you respond.
Be a good listener and ensure that you take into consideration the ideas of others before you dismiss their thoughts, especially in a group setting. Avoid speaking negatively or using unprofessional language. Showing respect this way will ensure you are treated with respect while speaking or presenting an idea to a group.
Be Honest
Honesty is one of the essential qualities of integrity. Women of integrity strive to be truthful. If you make a mistake, be the first to admit it. Take responsibility for your actions. Make amends and learn from the situation. Being able to accept a mistake is one of the hardest things for many people to do. It is an unfortunate flaw and should be addressed if progress and growth are desired.
Be Trustworthy
Always follow through on your word. Do not over-promise. When you say you are going to do something, get it done. Meet your responsibilities and commitments. If you cannot complete a task when promised, say something, and renegotiate the date or ask for additional help. You must communicate if people are going to trust you. If someone confides in you, respect that confidence.
Be Hardworking
Part of integrity is demonstrating that you have a strong work ethic. Show up to work ready to participate. Women of integrity always strive to do their best work and deliver it on time. Recognize that your work matters and does have an impact on the business. By taking pride in your work, others will notice. You will be recognized as someone who can be relied upon when help is needed or if new projects become available.
Be Positive
It’s essential to set a positive example. When you demonstrate a positive attitude, those around you will be encouraged to do the same. It doesn’t matter whether you are in a leadership role or not. Set a good example to all those you encounter.
Be Productive
Ensure your work is always the highest quality. Do it well and complete assignments on or before the due dates. Be productive during work hours and meet your tasks and special projects with enthusiasm and motivation. Your reliability quotient will go way up. People will notice! If, for some reason, you fail to meet a goal, hold yourself responsible and be the first to mention it to your supervisor. Being upfront about this is always the best thing, and it opens the opportunity to discuss ways to avoid similar outcomes in the future.
In Conclusion
This discussion has touched on some vital qualities that represent integrity. You may think of many more as you consider your integrity quotient. Each day offers opportunities for you to take the high road. Just remember, you are a work in progress and constantly improving!
