Importance of infrastructure for sustainability

The 2024 Paris Olympics officially kick off today!

As the largest sporting event in the world, what are they doing to make the events more sustainable? Impressively they have limited new construction, sourced local food and using 100% renewable energy from wind and solar. They have cleaned up the Seine River and are offsetting carbon through reforestation. Not sure the athletes will appreciate this, but the Olympic village as had their air conditioning eliminated too.

An impressive outcome, for the first time in history, for gender equality, is that there will be a 50/50 male/female athlete representation for the first time ever!

With all the efforts the city and country have had to organise and implement, it is a bit disappointing to read this morning that ‘someone’ has sabotaged their rail network, which was part of their sustainable plan to use existing transport mechanisms for athletes and spectators!

Shows how important infrastructure is for ensuring a sustainable journey.
