The Importance of Identifying Product Market Fits with Emerging Tech w/ Peggy Johnson of Magic Leap – Episode 28 of “Chambers Talks: A Podcast Series
What is the biggest mistake startups make? According to startup CEO Peggy Johnson , it’s seeing the potential of tech in the future but not focusing on the here and now.
Build it, and they will come. This was the premise driving the 1989 movie, Field of Dreams. While it made for a heartwarming story about baseball at the time, the “build-it-and-they-will-come” approach to innovation is detrimental in business, especially for up-and-coming players trying to break through the noise. Instead, identifying realistic and timely product market fit in the current moment is crucial to the success of any business.
For the next episode of #ChambersTalks #podcast , Peggy from Magic Leap joined me to talk about the importance of #SolvingMarketProblems with tech for target audiences. We talk about how easy it is to get caught up when there is a lot of buzz and excitement around the “next big thing”, but new products (no matter how cool or flashy) often fail to gain traction in the market because the right questions are not being asked.
When Peggy assumed the leadership role at Magic Leap, which is focused on augmented reality (AR), she quickly grasped that Magic Leap’s state-of-the-art device readily addressed more problems for the enterprise space, and she had the courage to lead the company through its pivot from a consumer to an enterprise focus. Now, Magic Leap is reimagining, for instance, how surgeons perform life-saving surgeries. While wearing one of Magic Leap’s headsets, a surgeon can simultaneously operate on a patient and read their vital signs information with an intelligent display in terms of field of view. The smart content placement is where Magic Leap excels and why Peggy believes this device is poised to be the leading game-changer in the AR market.
Listen to learn more of Peggy’s insights and leadership lessons. She shared with me and our listeners why she anticipates that AR will be the next paradigm shift in computing, in addition to diving into her view on the progress made in increasing diversity in STEM – and how much farther we have to go – and more.
