We have all been told the importance of keeping hydrated numerous times, by many people, throughout our lives - but has anyone looked into why that is the case??
- Digestion: water supports production of gastric juices, hence enables the breakdown of food, and helps nutrients to become more readily available. It also prevent constipation and other digestive issues.
- Body temperature: water helps dissipating heat through sweating, preventing overheating during exercise and hot conditions
- Blood circulation: water allows proper blood volume to be maintained which is essential for the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to cells
- Elimination of waste: water helps to flush out toxins and waste from the body.
- Electrolyte balance: the right level of electrolytes is critical to regulate everything in the body, from oxygen delivery to fluid balance within the cells. Dehydration either through sweating or not drinking enough might lead to electrolyte imbalance.
- Skin: Hydration is essential for glowing, balanced skin.
Cognitive and Psychological functions:
- Mood and memory: dehydration can lead to feelings of fatigue, irritability, and a decreased mental clarity. Hence, drinking water supports brain function and helps you stay focused, alert, and able to retain more information.??
- Stress and fatigue: good hydration supports hormone balance and improves sleep quality; therefore, you should feel less tired, irritable, and stressed.?
- Weight management: water is vital for good metabolism and supports appetite regulation, with dehydration often mistaken for hunger.?
- Aim to drink eight glasses of water a day – this is about 2L
- Consume water-rich fruits and vegetables like cucumber, celery, oranges, and strawberries.
- If you consume alcohol and caffeine, moderate the consumption, as it leads to dehydration
- Have herbal teas that are hydrating and provide various benefits.
- Establish a routine for drinking water throughout the day, for instance through reminders etc…
- Ensure to bring a bottle of water with you when out and about.
- Add natural flavor to water to make it more interesting, such as a squeeze of lemon or lime or fresh mint leaves or steep slices of ginger (if using hot water).
