The Importance Of Humility
Humility is highly treasured in the presence of God. A humble disposition showcases a high regard and respect for God. Humility is a character trait that also comes with a promise. Proverbs 22 verse 4 states: Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honour and life. God constantly used men of low repute and humble beginnings to fulfil his purposes, most notably, Moses, David, and Job. God revealed his power and vision to men like these, and in some cases, made them King over his people of Israel. God is stated to resist the proud but giving grace to the humble (James 4 verse 6).
A wonderful example of humility is David’s attitude to King Saul. The prophet Samuel anointed David as Saul’s successor to the throne. A spirit of pride and suspicion led King Saul to pursue David seeking to end his life. However, David determined not to lift a hand against the Lord’s anointed. He refused to kill Saul even when the opportunity presented itself and always addressed Saul as my lord, revealing the extent of David’s grace level to his persistent adversary. Another prominent example of humility is Moses. The Bible revealed that Moses was the humblest person that lived in the presence of the Lord. This relates to the action of Aaron and Miriam speaking against Moses amongst themselves. The Lord heard their conversation and had a meeting with them. The Lord declared that Moses has been an ever-faithful servant, and he talks with him face to face. In the New Testament, John the Baptist states “I must decrease so that He may increase”. John the Baptist showcases his humility in his first encounter with Jesus at the Jordan River. He understood that the mission of the Kingdom of God is bigger than him by encouraging his disciples to become the disciples of Jesus and declaring, “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am worthy to carry”.

One positive outcome of humility is that God reveals to you secrets that he may not reveal to others. God sees your heart condition, as well as your intentions, which dictates the amount of revelation he can reveal to you. Often, humility before God allows Adonai to elevate you in the presence of your enemies. Humility enables God to unlock the secret treasures of heaven and pronounce favors specifically related to your needs. Humility therefore should be the foundation of our relations with others and God. The very commandment to “love our neighbours as ourselves” requires us to have a humble disposition and to consider others’ interests before ours. True leadership is shown through genuine humility towards others, as well as self-sacrifice.
