The Importance Of Human Connection: Physically Apart But Emotionally Together.

Physically we can’t hug a friend in need, visit our favourite fitness class, walk into work, pour a cup of tea with many of our relatives. It’s tricky, all we want is to be close together during turbulent times....2 metres has never felt so distant before.
But all is not lost. Studies have shown that human connection can come in the form of getting an offer of help from a stranger, looking at a photo of someone that you love - it can all ease the pain and reduce all the physical symptoms that are associated with a lack of connection.
As humans, there are two types of connection that will heighten our overall sense of well being. The first is a deep connection between two people. This can be between two friends, romantic partners, or family members. It requires that both parties feel loved, listened to, and understood. It’s quality over quantity with this one.
The second type of connection is a feeling of belonging to a social group e.g. a close group of friends. These are the people that can provide much needed support and guidance in a non-judgemental way. These are ‘your people’!
So what can we do to ensure that we keep emotionally connected through these times?!
- Check in - phone calls/video calls.
- Support in any way that you can - Whether you are the recipient or the giver, kindness is good for your health.
- Wave to neighbours, continue to smile when you see someone - god knows we need this more than ever at the moment!
