The Importance of Having a Unique Personal Brand

Many years ago, when I was at the bottom of the corporate ladder, eager to ascend, I was told that hard work was the key to success. I poured my heart and soul into my work, but the results were underwhelming. No breakthrough. Then, a mentor whispered that working smart was the secret. I strategized and optimized, yet still found myself stuck. Why? Because I was merely replicating what others had already done. I was the epitome of copy and paste.
After over 40 years of corporate experience and finally reaching the last rung on the ladder, I realized the key to climbing was differentiation—crafting a unique personal brand and then wearing it on your sleeve at the right time, in the right place, to the right measure. Without it, you’re just a Camry: reliable and efficient but never the standout parked at the entrance of a 5-star hotel. So, how does one build a unique personal brand?
Know Yourself
Understanding who you are is the foundation of a strong personal brand. This means recognizing your strengths, weaknesses, values, and passions. Flaunt your strengths, be open to your weaknesses, stand up to your values, and do all this passionately. This, dear reader, is easier said than done.
Action Step: If you can’t list your top three qualities (not skills) by the time you finish reading this paragraph (not the whole blog), stop here. You are not ready yet. Take time for self-reflection and seek feedback from trusted colleagues and mentors. Identify what makes you unique and how these traits can be leveraged professionally.
Be Authentic
Authenticity is the foundation of a strong personal brand. In an era where transparency is valued, people can easily spot insincerity. Authenticity builds trust and credibility, making you more relatable and trustworthy. Being authentic means staying true to your values and not pretending to be someone you are not. Projecting an image that is not you on LinkedIn, IG or other social media places will not work because corporate Botox can be easily spotted, and when it does, your brand will be as authentic as a Gucci bag bought from an alley in Karama or China Town.
Action Step: Align your actions with your values and beliefs. Share your true experiences and stories. Avoid the temptation to imitate others or present a false image. Authenticity will naturally attract people who resonate with your true self.

Be Seen
Visibility is vital in personal branding. If people do not see you, they cannot recognize your value. Being visible means actively participating in your industry, attending events, and engaging in discussions. It also involves creating an online presence that reflects your brand.
Action Step: Attend industry conferences, seminars, and networking events. Participate in professional groups and forums. Use social media platforms like LinkedIn to share your insights and achievements. Create content like blogs or videos to showcase your expertise and viewpoints.
Be Heard
Just being seen is not enough; you also need to be heard. Your voice is a powerful tool in building your personal brand. Speak up in meetings, contribute to discussions, and share your ideas. Being vocal helps establish you as a thought leader and influencer in your field.
Action Step: Volunteer for speaking engagements and panel discussions. Write articles or opinion pieces for industry publications. Engage in meaningful conversations on social media and other platforms. Make sure your voice adds value and reflects your unique perspective.
