The Importance of Having a LinkedIn Presence: My Journey and Cybersecurity Awareness Month Challenge to You

The Importance of Having a LinkedIn Presence: My Journey and Cybersecurity Awareness Month Challenge to You

I’ve been on LinkedIn for 19 years now. While that’s quite the milestone, it wasn’t until six years ago that I truly began utilizing this platform to its fullest potential. Before then, LinkedIn was just a place where I kept my professional history—static and untouched. Then, I made the decision to start posting.

It’s only been three years since I really found my voice. I stopped second-guessing every post and started embracing who I am, both professionally and personally. And that’s when things started to change. Some of the most meaningful relationships and exciting work opportunities I’ve had have emerged because of LinkedIn.

It wasn’t just about showing what I could do; it was about demonstrating who I am. And that’s something I want to share with you.

Why LinkedIn Matters

LinkedIn is more than just a professional platform. It’s a space where people showcase their skills, share their insights, and, most importantly, build relationships. Whether you’re a student, a new graduate, or an experienced professional, LinkedIn can be the key to opening doors you didn’t even know existed.

Your qualifications may get you noticed, but it’s who you are that makes people reach out. At the end of the day, many of us have similar certifications, degrees, or work experiences. What’s going to make someone choose you? It’s your authenticity, your voice, and how you demonstrate your unique personality and expertise.

When I stopped worrying about every little detail of my posts and focused on sharing what was on my mind and in my heart, the results were astonishing. People connected with my story, and that’s where real opportunities began.

My Challenge to You for Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October is just around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to challenge yourself. During Cybersecurity Awareness Month, I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and commit to posting regularly. My challenge to you is this:

Post one time each day during October. I know that sounds like a lot, but if you start planning now, you’ll set yourself up for success. Imagine the connections, opportunities, and conversations you could ignite by showing up every day.

But if posting daily seems too daunting and you’re thinking, “Diana, I don’t even post twice a year,” let me make it easier for you: challenge yourself to post once a week. Just four posts in October. That’s it. You can do that. I believe in you.

How to Make It Easier

I want to help you get started by offering a list of topic ideas that you can choose from. Some will show your expertise in cybersecurity, while others are more personal—allowing people to connect with who you are, not just what you do. After all, people want to get to know you.

If you’re still doubting whether you have anything valuable to say, remember two things:

  1. You only need to be one step ahead to help the person behind you. Even if you’re just starting out, your experiences and knowledge can provide insight to someone else.
  2. Only you can do what you do, the way that you do it. Your voice, perspective, and style are what make you unique.

So, here’s your chance. Below is a list of ideas to help you craft your posts for Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Some are more technical, while others are more personal—but all of them are valuable.
