The Importance of Having a Hobby

I get asked all the time what my hobby is.
"Do you play golf? Do you play music? Do you paint?"
Honestly, I'm not good at any of those things ??. And if I'm being real, I don't usually do things unless I feel like I can be good at them. Look, I know this sounds a bit hypocritical, especially given how much I talk about embracing challenges and getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. But when it comes to hobbies, I want something that brings me joy, helps me grow, and keeps me open to new experiences.
Every time this question comes up, my default answer is "work" (because I genuinely love what I do). But then the inevitable follow-up is, "Well... outside of work, what do you do?"
For me, the answer is simple. There is one thing that I thoroughly enjoy: travel.
I love exploring new places, meeting new people, and immersing myself in different cultures. Travel is fulfilling, eye-opening, and energizing- everything I want in a hobby. It's not just about seeing new sights; it's about connecting with the unknown, learning from the unfamiliar, and coming back with stories and experiences that expand my perspective and push me to grow.
A couple of years ago, I realized I'm a bit of a xenophile (not to be confused with another "phile" word ??). I wholeheartedly love submerging myself in the unknown around the world. For me, it's not about just collecting passport stamps; it's about collecting experiences that fill my cup and keep me energized for the next adventure, whether it's personal or professional.
Now, this isn't to say I don't think hobbies should be hard or push you out of your comfort zone. But for me, it's all about discovering an activity that genuinely recharges my batteries and sincerely brings me joy. Whether you're great at your hobby or not, what's important is that it keeps you engaged and excited to come back to it again and again.
Don't pick a hobby just because it's the latest trend or because it allows you to escape reality for a while. Find something that complements your life, something that keeps your cup full, and enhances your overall well-being.

In the end, your hobby should deepen your connection with yourself and refresh your energy. Take a moment today to consider what that might be for you, and then make a plan to get started.
