Gerber files are the most widely accepted design file format for manufacturing and assembling printed circuit boards (PCBs). They facilitate the efficient manufacturing process by enabling the standardized transfer of design data between engineers and PCB manufacturers. Once the circuit design is completed and enters the order stage, contract manufacturers will require the submission of design files to accurately produce the PCB.

Any errors in the provided data can inevitably lead to PCB defects, additional costs, and delays in time. To avoid these consequences, Gerber files play a crucial role in PCB manufacturing.

What are Gerber Files, and what information do they contain?

Gerber files are a series of ASCII vector format files used to define PCB design specifications. They are generated using electronic design automation (EDA) or computer-aided design (CAD) tools and provide information such as circuit board configuration parameters, aperture descriptions, XY coordinate positions, and drawing instructions. The configuration details include the size and shape of the PCB to be manufactured.

Information for each layer of the PCB is recorded in separate files, defining elements such as copper traces, pads, vias, solder masks, silk screens, and component identifiers. Gerber files indicate the XY coordinate positions of each geometric shape and use instructions to draw these shapes on the physical board.

The basic components of Gerber files include board dimensions, board outline, top assembly, top silkscreen, top solder mask, top paste, top copper, internal signals, inner layers, bottom copper, bottom paste, bottom solder mask, bottom silkscreen, bottom assembly, and manufacturing information (providing details on layer stacking, drill holes, cutting, etc.).

The file extensions for Gerber files generated by computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) tools can be selected by the user and commonly use extensions like ".TOP" for the top layer, ".BOT" for the bottom layer, and ".drl" for the drill data.

Gerber File Versions and Other Output Formats:

The type and quantity of Gerber files generated depend on the specifications and complexity of the circuit board. Different Gerber file formats have distinct data structures but are used to create templates for PCB manufacturing.

1. RS274-D: This is the standard Gerber file format, using a numeric control format composed of XY coordinates and drawing codes. It is represented by the extension ".gbr" and was widely popular initially. However, this format requires manual assignment of aperture codes to generate accurate Gerber files, leading to the development of extended Gerber formats.

2. RS274-X: This is a revised version with the extension ".gbx" and uses an ASCII format that integrates the four main parts of Gerber information (configuration parameters, aperture tables, XY coordinates, and drawing instructions) into a single file. In this format, aperture locations are automatically updated.

3. Gerber X2: This is the latest file version and includes additional data such as layer stack details, via and pad attributes, impedance-controlled traces, etc. It supports extensions like ".top" and ".bot". This format is backward compatible with RS274-X but incorporates a significant amount of manufacturing data, reducing file errors and data ambiguity.

4. Open Database (ODB++): This is another data exchange format that can contain all the information required to define PCB layers in a single file. It facilitates capturing all the data needed for DFM checks, such as board stackup, bill of materials, dimensions, and drill details. It is supported by major CAM and DFM tools.

5. IPC-2581: This is the latest standard for organizing PCB data and exchanging it between CAD and CAM systems during the manufacturing and assembly processes. It is a machine-readable open standard based on XML files, providing all manufacturing data to CAM systems and allowing direct extraction of design data without interpretation by the CAM system.

Gerber files are widely adopted as the data transfer format in the PCB manufacturing industry, supporting high-volume production of PCB products. The latest Gerber X2 version is favored among manufacturers for its ability to deliver high-performance and reliable PCBs. These Gerber files reduce manufacturing errors, improve efficiency, and accelerate time-to-market for products.
