The Importance of the first 3 months

The Importance of the first 3 months

The importance of the first 3 months

Starting a new job IS HARD! You have first-day nerves, you don't know anyone, it's just a bit weird being "new". But don't worry, no one has ever progressed themself without stepping just a little outside their comfort zone. ??

Your first few months are often filled with "what on earth is this system" and "why do I STILL not have that IT login?

You might be slower than you'd expect and when month end or budgeting rolls around, it can be difficult to find where you fit. You don't even have anyone to go to lunch with yet! Your old job was much more comfortable.

Can you even do this, is this just one promotion too far? *Spoiler alert - It is not!

Starting a new job is tough and lots of people wonder if they have made the right decision or even if they are good enough to take the step up. Trust me, You are!

? Dont worry! ?

Stick with it. As time goes on, it gets easier, and the 3-month mark is normally a great place to take stock.

Some jobs (especially Accounting) are much smoother when you have been through the cycle a few times. You will be surprised how many candidates wonder if they have made the right decision. The overwhelming majority have, but it just takes a little time to settle in and find your place.

? Things that can help ?

? More office time at the start can be useful

? Get yourself out and in front of your key stakeholders

? Spend time with operations where possible, to understand what drives the business

? Understand that things take time when learning

? Don't be hard on yourself if you make a few mistakes

I guarantee you will feel better after three months, little problems such as team fit and flexibility are ironed out by this point. And if you are worrying if you can do it...You can!

In a years time, you will be able to look back and see just how far you have come. ??

?? Hiring Managers....??

The first three months are absolutely key in the long term success of an employee. Everything from onboarding to long-term development plans are important.

If you can help new hires to feel happy and stable in the short term, In the long term, you will have more successful hires and a reduction in staff turnover.

? Things to do to help in the first 3 months ?

? Give them time to shine

People take time to develop. Yes they can often make an impact fairly early on, but it takes months to get fully up to speed. What you see as simple, they may not yet understand. Patience early on is important.

? Onboarding!

Why spend months recruiting, to then lose staff due to poor onboarding? A shocking % of staff lack a laptop on day 1 and even more lack IT logins. Concise inductions can also be very useful, when done properly.

? Introduce them to key stakeholders

No matter how senior they are, give them a leg up and set up meetings with key stakeholders.

? Integrate them into the team

Try to do a little more than plonk them at their desk with their laptop. Can you give them a site tour, can you take them out for a team lunch? Can you assign someone to look after them for the first week?

? Feedback!

One of the most important. In the busy world of the Finance Team, this can often get lost. Before you start, put in their diary some "check ins". 15 minutes will do. As an example, End of week 1, End of Month 1, 2 and 3.

This hour (total) will help solve any small issues before they get big, make sure you are all on the same page on areas such as "flexibility" and reassure the candidate they are going in the right direction!

The first three months is a team effort between the new hire and the new company. Getting this right massively boosts the chance of long term success!

Good luck ??
