Importance of Fear
Change is difficult, time-consuming and costly affair. Meaningful organizational change cannot occur without the cooperation of the affected stakeholders. As a result, creating a sense of urgency for a needed change is the first step senior leaders must take to gain the cooperation of management and employees. Creating a sense of urgency alerts the organization that change must occur and it begins the preparation for change.
Urgency creates fear and fear in turn may help in producing movement. However, in a large-scale change, if fear is not converted into positive urgency and with some speed, it can defeat the purpose. Therefore, creating a fear must be done well for a change effort to have a meaningful organizational impact.

7 年Andy Grove, legendary CEO of Intel wrote a book called "Only the Paranoid Survive" back in 1996. Grove pointed out that managers are responsible for shielding companies from outside attack and manage change - a situation he called "Strategic Inflection Points" (SIPs). SIPs can be caused by technological change and/or competitors. An skillful manager should leverage such market condition. He should carefully craft a situation of urgency and paranoia where employees are compelled to give their best and thus ensue success.
Combination of urgency and need is mother of many innovation. Well said sir

7 年Well said sir. Fear is both an stimulant and deterrent equally, the results hence is largely based on how we respond to the situation. While fear is important,at most cases, but if we are unable to convert into positive urgency like you said, the result can be disappointing.
