This week during our weekly #BeyondTheBusinessPlan session for #FemaleFounders, my guest was Emma Heley who shared her thoughts and experience on this topic.
Drawing from nearly 20 years of experience in PR and communications, Emma highlighted the evolving landscape of PR and the critical role of personal branding.
The Evolution of PR
Emma explained that PR involves crafting a positive public image and building trust through media stories such as founder interviews and product launches. However, with the rise of digital media, the PR landscape has dramatically shifted. While prestige publications still hold significance, online coverage now offers more longevity and reach. Today, effective campaigns blend traditional and digital PR for maximum impact.
What is Personal Branding?
Personal branding involves promoting yourself as an individual, showcasing your unique combination of skills, values, and passions. Emma emphasised that every leader and team member should develop a personal brand as part of their business strategy.
Why Personal Branding Matters
People connect with people, and an authentic personal brand attracts opportunities and earns trust. Emma shared the example of lawyer Karen Holden MPhil (Cantab) (also one of our regular guest speakers), who carved out a niche as a thought leader through columns and TV appearances. By building a personal brand, individuals can enhance their visibility and establish themselves as experts in their fields.

Advice on Press Coverage
In the group discussion, one of our participants asked about how to start finding journalists in order to get press coverage. Emma suggested starting local. Identify journalists who write about your industry and connect with them on social channels like Twitter. Sharing meaningful perspectives can also establish you as a thought leader and grow your influence.
Conclusion
In summary, personal branding boosts your visibility, sets you apart, and makes you memorable. It’s an ongoing process but worth the investment as part of your overall business growth.
