Inclusive education emphasises equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their diverse backgrounds, abilities, or characteristics. An integral aspect of inclusive education is the promotion of equity, ensuring that every student has access to an education that meets their unique needs. Equity in the fully inclusive classroom is paramount as it fosters a supportive and empowering learning environment where students can thrive and reach their full potential.

Equity in education refers to the fair and just distribution of resources, opportunities, and support to all students, irrespective of their circumstances. It acknowledges that students have varying needs and challenges and aims to eliminate disparities that may hinder their educational progress. Equity in the fully inclusive classroom goes beyond equality, recognising that students require different levels of support to overcome barriers and achieve success.

Educators must adopt various strategies and practices to establish an inclusive classroom that promotes equity. The framework is simple to understand and apply as long as the teacher and school are flexible. UDL ensures that each student can access and participate in the curriculum effectively by providing multiple means of representation, expression, and engagement.

Encouraging collaboration and peer-to-peer interaction promotes equity by fostering a sense of belonging and shared responsibility within the classroom. Working together on projects enables all students to get something out of it, but they must be taught how to collaborate. What are their roles and responsibilities? What is the group plan? Collaborative learning enables students to learn from one another, appreciate different perspectives, and develop social skills.

There are so many benefits to practising inclusion and equity in the classroom. Equity in the fully inclusive classroom enhances academic achievement for all students. When barriers to learning are addressed, students can engage actively in the learning process, leading to improved educational outcomes. Equity ensures that every student has the necessary resources and support to succeed.

We are not teaching the children a "them and us" mentality. They learn to appreciate and understand different perspectives, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
