Is having an entrepreneurial mindset important in today's ever-changing business world?
I think having an entrepreneurial mindset is the only way to go in this new era of business growth and development, we need to think differently.
Planning and defining what needs to be done, how to do and then taking action is the key to any business growth and development in any business but even more so in the entrepreneurial journey.
You see entrepreneurs by definition take more calculated risks to achieve success, they are willing to go all out to get results, they need to, they have no other choice, most of the time. Having an entrepreneurial mindset is the key to business success.
Ask any highly successful CEO or business owner, they have developed an entrepreneurial mindset, they think like an entrepreneur.
An entrepreneurial mindset is a way of thinking that enables you to overcome challenges, be decisive, and accept responsibility for your outcomes. It is a constant need to improve your skills, learn from your mistakes, and take continuous action on your ideas. Anyone willing to do the work can develop an entrepreneurial mindset
Entrepreneurial Thinking: Successful entrepreneurs and business owners think different, they look at every problem they face with the confidence that a solution can and will be found. Creating that entrepreneurial mindset will help you to think about what you’re doing and why. It will help you to know where you would like your business to lead you, and what risks you’re willing to take to succeed. If you know the answers to these questions, you’ll be ready to tackle all the challenges your new business throws at you.
Entrepreneurial Characteristics: Successful entrepreneurs are always willing to take risks, being willing to take risks and accept failure is a unique skill that isn’t relevant solely in the business world. Incorporating an entrepreneurial mindset into your everyday life will help you to minimize the importance of failure and rejection in your life. It will also help you to keep moving forward even when things are difficult. Additionally, being able to plan ahead and foresee potential problems (a key part of an entrepreneurial mindset) will help you to live a more organised, less stressful life. In turn, this will help you to better run your business.
Here are my 5 top characteristics of an entrepreneurial mindset in business:
Creativity: Entrepreneurs by definition think outside the box, they look at challenges or status quo as just another roadblock that has not been bypassed as yet. If something isn’t working well, there may be more than one fix, and you shouldn’t always fall back on the simplest or safest method. Critical thinking is the key to a successful business, and being willing to find creative solutions even if it might mean more work will help your business greatly in the long run.
Decisiveness: To succeed as an entrepreneur, you must gain the ability to look at a problem or situation, digest all available data, and make a confident decision to move forward. Your ability as a decision-maker will make or break your future successes. In fact, at the opposite end, indecision is one of the greatest causes of business failure. When you can’t decide what to do, you delay taking action. In other words, you do nothing. Think about how many businesses have failed due to not taking decisive action even when it is staring them in the face?
Confidence: This characteristic is probably one of the most important qualities you need when building a successful business even when you don’t really know what you are doing. It is essential that you get used to the uncomfortable feeling of knowing that you don’t know what you’re doing, with the right mindset and attitude you will work it out. Whether it’s getting on stage to speak, launching a new product, or starting a new business, we tend to see others doing it and incorrectly assume they’ve always been good at it. They weren’t born knowing how to speak confidently, launch successful products, or excel with business acumen. They also weren’t born knowing how to become entrepreneurs. If you do your best to think, feel, and act like an entrepreneur, people will treat you like one.
Accountability: You need to be responsible for your actions or inactions, entrepreneurs don’t have a blame culture, they own the system, process or actions. They have a no more excuses attitude. Accountability is required of entrepreneurs as well as successful employees and business owners. Stop passing the buck and blaming others. Hold yourself accountable – even when you aren’t to blame and take action to fix the problem. Know what needs to be done, measure the success of your actions adapt, adjust and be fully accountable for the results.
Resilience: Your ability to overcome, bounce back or recover from setbacks, something you will face regularly in business. Resilient leaders in the business world see changes as opportunities for growth and have a calm confidence in their own ability. They make decisions easily and quickly and can reframe failures during periods of turbulence. If your business can quickly and easily take negativity or failure and turns it around into a learning experience that is a resilient business model. Success rarely happens in a straight line. Taking wrong turns and making mistakes is something that happens to everyone. Resilience isn’t only helpful when dealing with catastrophic mistakes. It’s a way to handle the small, simple decisions you’ve made that didn’t turn outright. Resilience enables you to think, act, and move with purpose, making small, incremental corrections along the way.
There are so many more traits or characteristics but these would have to be my top 5.
There are so many misconceptions around entrepreneurship and starting a business, it’s no wonder there are so much doubt and so little confidence. If you want to start building an entrepreneurial mindset, identify your favourite successful businessperson, research how they came to be a success, and any advice they might have. Model their behaviour and apply your newfound entrepreneurial mindset to your business as well as your life, and you’re sure to be on the path to success.
