The Importance of Details in Landscape Design

The Importance of Details in Landscape Design

Dear LinkedIn Community,

In the landscape design and project management arena, overlooking details during the Design Development (DD) stage can lead to significant challenges during the Issued for Construction (IFC) phase. Here's an insightful exploration into this crucial aspect, with a focus on green roof components.

When we fail to prioritize intricate details during the DD stage, we set ourselves up for difficulties later on. The DD stage lays the foundation of our project, where concepts evolve into tangible plans. Neglecting landscape design nuances during this critical phase creates a ripple effect throughout the project lifecycle.

Consider a scenario where the green roof layers' specifics, including built-up and waterproofing details, are not adequately specified during DD. As the project progresses to IFC, these omissions become apparent, jeopardizing the integrity of the green roof system.

Green roofs, with their intricate layering systems, require meticulous attention to detail. Without specifying the typical details for each layer, including drainage outlets, irrigation lines, and communication pathways for other companies involved, the risk of water leakage increases substantially.

It's essential to recognize that in some projects, the designer's scope is limited to DD, with other consultants producing the IFC documents. Without comprehensive detailing and client/project management feedback integrated into the IFC stage, crucial gaps in the green roof system may remain unaddressed, leading to potential water leakage issues post-construction.

Many clients are hesitant about implementing complex landscape features like green roofs, water features, and green walls not due to aesthetic concerns or costliness but due to concerns about construction reliability and potential failures.

To address these concerns effectively, project management and landscape discipline must focus intensely on the DD stage. This includes capturing all tiny details and full performance specifications, especially for intricate components like water features, green walls, and green roofs.

By prioritizing thoroughness and precision during the DD stage, we instill confidence in clients and stakeholders, mitigating the risk of construction failures and ensuring the successful implementation of complex landscape features.

Let's learn from these insights and commit to upholding the highest standards of excellence in every stage of our landscape projects.
