The Importance of a Deeper Understanding
You know exactly what it’s like: You get a wicked awesome new business idea and you scribble some thoughts down about it and start brainstorming all of the new possibilities. It takes about a week or two but your once awesome idea kind of fizzles out because you’ve probably convinced yourself someone else is doing it better or a few obstacles discourage you away.
In my life, this is pretty commonplace. I’ve got notebooks upon notebooks with pie-in-the-sky ideas that lay dormant because I’ve moved on to bigger and better ideas or because there were some roadblocks or barriers that I put up for myself. I’ll revisit these ideas from time to time and sometimes they spark new spin-offs or perhaps barriers that I built up before are now beatable and that old idea can become new again.
Or maybe it resonates a little more with me now. Maybe it aligns with the current path I’m on. This is what we like to call: aligning to your why.
I’d argue that if you took just a few minutes to explore your why your brainstorming sessions would gain a bit more clarity. After an awesome idea strikes, you’d soon uncover if it was an idea worth pursuing or if it’s better left as a fun blue-sky exercise. If we took just a few minutes to see if this new idea resonates with your why we’d know if we had the right stuff to make it happen.
Uncovering your ‘why’ will keep you grounded
It’s a little tough because I’m kind of facing this beast right now. It’s sort of peeking its head out from around the corner and whispering:?“You can’t do this…” (It’s in that taunting tone that kids use too.) It’s scary because your inner voice can whisper the most chord-striking, self-doubting things to you because it knows you so well. It pushes all the right buttons. Every. Single. Time.
Remembering your why is so important here because it keeps you focused on the bigger picture.
Why did I start doing this? Why do I want to live my life this way? What am I willing to ultimately trade-off to accomplish my why?
Your why will keep you going. Your why will keep you upbeat. Your why will give you energy.
Oftentimes we get sidetracked with a get-rich-quick strategy or putting our ideas on a pedestal and it’s just too easy to give up should we get confronted with a bit of resistance. Resistance on the surface can seem like a bad thing but it’s important to take some time and think about where the resistance comes from.

It’s important to recognize resistance and just kind of sit with it for a bit. Write down some self-doubts and then use a mind map and branch out and uncover where that thought even came from.
Resistance can often be met with a deep understanding of your why. When your inner voice starts to stir the pot you’ll be able to answer back with tough hitting retorts and you can bring back clarity and focus. It can break through barriers that are unknowingly growing around you.
Your call to action
Take some time today and commit to finding some quiet time and space to collect some thoughts around your why. Give yourself all the ammunition you’d need if things get a little heated. As you continue to spark new and awesome ideas just check-in with your path and see if the idea can resonate with your why.
Make all of your work come from your deepest why and you’ll not only create profound things but you’ll be able to knock over any resistance that comes your way.
Best of luck!
