As someone with over 30 years of practical experience in technology, I've seen firsthand how vital customer segmentation can be when selling products in new markets. I would like to give you an example.
A multinational company I worked with was trying to penetrate a new market with a multi-million dollar product. They tried marketing their product to several industries but needed help to gain traction. Despite their best efforts, they could not identify their product's target audience.
That's when they decided to step back and re-evaluate their approach. They realized they needed better understand their target audience's unique needs and preferences. By conducting in-depth customer segmentation research, they identified a client segment that had yet to be addressed.
They tailored their marketing efforts towards this client segment and successfully penetrated the market. As a result, the company greatly succeeded in the same industry they had been struggling with. The key to their success was proper customer segmentation.
