Part 1: Understanding Corporate Wellness: Why It Matters
By Robert Hilliard and Whitnie Wiley
Introduction
As we (Robert Hilliard and Whitnie Wiley) take the month of August off from our live program, The State of Leadership: SIMPLE & Beyond, to rejuvenate, refresh, and get creative, we're reminded of the critical importance of wellness. This pause is for relaxation, reflection, and planning for the new season.?
A year ago, two people I (Whitnie) deeply care about faced severe health challenges, a stark reminder of life's tenuous and fleeting nature. Their experiences underscored a vital truth: without health—mind, body, and spirit—we have nothing to give to our work or the companies we work for. This series aims to explore the importance of corporate wellness and how leadership plays a vital role in promoting it.
Understanding Corporate Wellness
Corporate wellness is a comprehensive approach to improving the health and well-being of employees. It encompasses physical, mental, and emotional health to create a supportive work environment that fosters overall well-being. The importance of wellness in the corporate world is growing as more companies recognize its profound impact on employees and the organization. However, organizations must commit to supporting their wellness initiative to succeed.
Corporate wellness programs support employees in adopting and maintaining healthy behaviors. These programs can range from physical fitness initiatives and mental health support to creating a balanced work environment that promotes rest and recovery. The ultimate goal is cultivating a workplace culture where health and wellness are prioritized and supported. Because of the cost of such programs, organizations sometimes struggle to justify the expense of creating them. However, the benefits far outweigh the cost of implementation.?
Benefits of Corporate Wellness
For Employees
Improved Health—Wellness programs can improve physical health by encouraging regular exercise, healthy eating, and routine medical check-ups. Programs that address mental health can also reduce stress and anxiety, leading to better overall well-being. Such programs can create a virtuous cycle as healthier employees take fewer sick days, which reduces the ripple effect of stress radiating out to employees who have to pick up the slack of their absent counterparts.???
Reduced Stress—Promoting workplace wellness and creating supportive environments for employees can significantly reduce stress levels. Programs that focus on mindfulness and stress management techniques are particularly beneficial in this regard. Reducing stress can help address various health issues such as heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, and anxiety. Furthermore, decreased stress levels can improve job performance, as calmer employees tend to make fewer errors.
Higher Job Satisfaction—Employees who feel their well-being is valued by their employer are generally more satisfied with their jobs. This satisfaction can lead to increased motivation, loyalty, and retention. The psychological impact of this can't be overstated. Job satisfaction is pivotal to the question, "Would? you recommend our company to your friends as a place to work?"?
For Leadership
Enhanced Team Performance—A healthy workforce is a more productive one. Leaders who prioritize wellness can expect improvements in team performance and collaboration. Physical and mentally healthy employees are more engaged and effective in their roles.
Stronger Workplace Culture—When leaders demonstrate a commitment to wellness, it fosters a positive and supportive workplace culture. This culture can improve morale, enhance team dynamics, and create a more cohesive and motivated workforce. Of course, culture has the most significant impact when it permeates all parts of the organization. Organizations must reflect their culture in all human interactions to achieve organizational goals, such as recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and employee development. Integrating culture in this way is challenging, but the benefits far outweigh the difficulties in making it happen.
For Customers/Clients
Better Service—Healthy and happy employees can provide excellent service, leading to higher customer satisfaction and loyalty. Clients and customers notice when they interact with energized and engaged employees. This positive interaction can result in the kind of positive "word of mouth" all organizations desire.
Increased Satisfaction—A company that values and invests in its employees' well-being is likely to cultivate a more positive reputation, which can attract and retain clients.

For the Company's Bottom Line
Reduced Healthcare Costs—Healthier employees tend to have lower healthcare costs. Companies can significantly reduce healthcare expenditures by preventing chronic illnesses and managing stress.
Increased Productivity—Wellness programs can boost productivity by reducing absenteeism and presenteeism. Healthy employees are more likely to be present and fully engaged.
Lower Absenteeism—As mentioned earlier, employees supported in their wellness efforts are less likely to take sick days, leading to a more stable and productive workforce.
The Role of Leadership
Leadership plays a crucial role in setting the tone for a culture of wellness. It is up to leaders to lead by example and prioritize their wellness, demonstrating its importance to the entire organization. When leaders show that they value health and well-being, it encourages employees to do the same.
Setting the Tone and Culture—Leaders can shape the organizational culture. By prioritizing wellness, they send a clear message that health is essential. This can be done through various means, such as implementing wellness policies, providing mental and physical health resources, and encouraging a balanced work-life approach. However, a sudden change can be confusing to employees. So, organizations looking to implement wellness programs where there have been none before should communicate the change thoroughly and often. Organizations can communicate through emails, newsletters, and blogs.
Leading by Example—Leaders must walk the wellness talk. This means taking breaks, using vacation days, and engaging in healthy activities. To quote Mary Kay Ash, "The speed of the leader is the speed of the gang." When employees see their leaders taking care of their well-being, they are more likely to follow suit. This promotes a healthier workforce and builds trust and respect within the organization.
Supporting Employees—Leaders should actively support their employees' wellness efforts. This can include offering flexible work schedules, providing access to wellness programs, and fostering an environment where employees feel comfortable discussing their health needs. Supportive leadership can make a significant difference in the success of wellness initiatives.
