The Importance of Connection: Building Meaningful Relationships
Building meaningful connections with others is more important than ever in today's fast-paced, data-driven and digital world. Strong connections can provide a sense of belonging, support, and purpose and help combat the loneliness and isolation that are too common in modern society. Several theories exist to support the importance of connection, such as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs or Daniel Goleman’s emotional intelligence model, to mention two. Strong relationships are crucial to a fulfilling home and work life. Whether with friends, family members, partners, or colleagues, having strong relationship connections can provide support, happiness, and a sense of belonging. In a work context, productivity increases, and retention problems decrease when people form meaningful connections. How can you foster a culture of connection and belonging?
I believe there 10 essential methods and characteristics to help you achieve meaningful connections:
1.???Be Approachable: Approachability is critical in building connections. Smile, introduce yourself to new colleagues or associates, and be open to hearing about their experiences and interests. Listen actively and ask questions; you have two ears and one mouth for a reason.
2.???Be Genuine: Authenticity is crucial when it comes to building connections. People can often tell when someone is insincere, so be genuine in your interactions. Show interest in their work and career goals and be willing to offer your own insights and experiences. Be a mentor when needed and a coach when required.
3.???Follow-Up: After meeting new colleagues, keep in touch often to keep the connection alive. Send a brief email or message thanking them for their time and expressing interest in staying in touch. This can help solidify the connection and keep the lines of communication open.
4.???Offer Help: Be willing to help others when you can. If a colleague needs assistance with a project or is looking for advice, offer your support. This can help build trust and strengthen the relationship over time. All too often, knowledge is withheld to benefit the career of the person who holds it, power, insecurity or ego are all reasons this takes place. Being honest and humble are all qualities that will rapidly develop trust.
5.???Communicate Openly: Good communication is key to building strong relationships. Be open and honest with your colleagues and friends, express your feelings, and listen actively. Avoid assumptions and take the time to understand their perspective. Don't underestimate the power of effective communication.
6.???Show Empathy: Empathy involves understanding and sharing the feelings of others. When someone is going through a difficult time, try to put yourself in their shoes and offer support and understanding. This can help deepen your connection and show that you care. A strong sense of connection will foster loyalty and bonds that drive high-performance teams.?Loyalty and a sense of belonging are powerful motivators and reasons to stay with a current employer.
7.???Practice Forgiveness: No relationship is perfect, and conflicts and disagreements are a natural part of any relationship, whether at work or home. When conflicts arise, practice tolerance and work to resolve the issue constructively. Remember, not all conflict is bad; in a team environment where trust exists, people feel comfortable speaking their minds and engaging in robust, open and honest dialogue.?

8.???Show Appreciation: Expressing gratitude and appreciation can help build stronger relationship connections. Take the time to acknowledge the efforts and contributions of your team, and let them know how much you value and appreciate them. I would suggest praising the team more, and the individual less and always deflect positive appraisal back onto the team.
9.???Be Present: Make an effort to be present in your relationships, put away your phone/device and focus on the person in front of you. This can help build deeper connections and show that you value their company.
10.??Be Supportive: Be there for your team during the good and bad times. Offer your support and encouragement, and be a source of strength and stability when they need it. Learn to understand and read your people, use behavioral profile assessments like DISC to help you.
