The Importance of Confirming a Start Date with your new offer

G'day everyone – hope the month of November has been a great one for everyone. Time really flies, and it is already mid of November already!

Anyway, continuing from my last post which touched on the above subject – if “you already have an employment offer on hand – with both a nice starting salary and a firm start date that you are comfortable with.” In this post, I would like to highlight the importance of having a confirmed start date to go along with any offers.

Depending on which industry you are in, your official termination notice period would vary anywhere between 1-3 months. If you have a 1-month notice period, having to confirm a start date would be quite a straight forward case then.

However, what if you have a 3-month notice period. On top of that, your new hiring company would like to buy-out a portion of this notice period for you to join them earlier? Then, this becomes a not-so-straight-forward case, because another party is thrown into the equation – your current company. Typically, in Malaysia, buy-out of notice period tends to be dependent on the current companies giving their blessings and accepting you leaving earlier. In this situation, now, three parties need to come to an agreement on a separation date – hence causing a delay in confirming a start date (despite you having an offer on hand).

Anything can happen in this period of time – when times are bad and/or when companies are going through internal restructuring, offers like this may be the first to get retracted.

To conclude, always be mindful of such situations – it is definitely in your best interest to have a start date pinned down soonest possible. You can then sit back and look forward to joining this new company with a peace of mind.

Signing off for now, have a good weekend ahead, y'all!

Do reach out to me if you are at a career cross-road at this point in time; I will be more than happy to assist you as much as possible. Cheers.

exciting about the big breakthrough

Do experience it once, after agreed on the package and awaiting offer letter. the position has been retracted due to unforeseen global event. the vacant post has been cancelled and i would say it has been lucky that i didn't do anything rush.
