The Importance of Coding as a Digital Marketer

The Importance of Coding as a Digital Marketer

As the world continues to evolve, we need to evolve with it. Technology is all around us and it is continuing to take over. The ability to be savvy with multiple different coding platforms is becoming an increasingly demanded skill in the workplace. The necessity for marketers to be familiar with coding principles is becoming a universal standard. In today’s blog I am going to teach you about three different coding websites called Codecademy, Squarespace, and WordPress. I am going to go in depth on each of these and discuss why a digital marketer should use these tools.

Codecademy

We all know that coding is a different language and it’s not easy to learn. With that being said, codeacademy is an online interactive platform that offers free coding classes in different programming languages including Python, Java, HTML, C++, etc... As described by Codecademy, HTML is the skeleton of all web pages. It’s often the first language learned by marketers and is core to front-end development work. Without HTML, websites would have no structure.

Codecademy has an incredible user-friendly platform making it one of the best places learn and practice. I played around with it and although I struggled, it made me want to keep learning and improve my skills.

Squarespace

Squarespace is the all-in-one solution for anyone looking to create a website. It provides software as a service for website building and hosting. Customers can use pre-built website templates and drag and drop elements to create webpages. Squarespace provides blogging tools, SEO tools, Analytics, etc...

This sleek website is very simple to use. Anything you click on can be edited which makes putting together your website super easy. You can also preview what your website would look like on a desktop, mobile, and tablet which super beneficial.

WordPress

WordPress is the most popular online publishing platform, currently powering more than a third of the web. From blogging to e-commerce to business and portfolio websites, WordPress is a versatile content management system based on PHP.

I personally found WordPress pretty confusing and it wasn’t as straightforward as Squarespace. You instead have to search for what you want, and it can be a little overwhelming. When putting together your website, there was only six different options in which felt a little limiting. I tested it and put together my own digital marketing website called Digital Delights.

Similarities & Differences

Codecademy, Squarespace, and WordPress all use HTML as the outline of their webpages. Squarespace and WordPress are essentially the same thing because they are both a content management system that helps you develop and launch your website without having to know coding. Codecademy is only an educational platform that teaches you the necessary tools to build a website on your own. Squarespace lets you build your own website from a variety of templates, but you can’t install third party plugins on this platform because Squarespace is the owner. With WordPress, you can upload third party plugins and it requires a little more work.

Why should digital marketers use all three?

Given the combination of understanding coding, Squarespace, and WordPress, a marketer can be a much more valuable asset to any business. By using all three of these websites, you will be a well-rounded marketer ready to take on the tech side of things!

Yes! Built my first website 15yrs ago. Just last month used those same skills to make last-minute QC fixes to a marketing email someone else built. These skills are needed to get the job done!
