Introduction
Communication is a core tool that enables participants involved to exchange and transfer information from one place, person or group to another. This exchange and transfer can take place in oral, written, visual presentation, and other mediums. In the current data-driven world where our survival and growth are dependent on data (as high lighted in Covid-19 impacted world), clear communication is more vital than ever.
Importance of good communication
Improves team building
Team productivity is greatly influenced by how they act, react, and behave with each other. Communicating openly, clearly, and with empathy will help in building rapport with a team and boost their spirit towards productively.
Company client relationship
A smooth and trustworthy relationship between the company and client can be built over clear communication. Clients value a brand when communication is open and clear. These valued clients will be able to speak positively about the company. This kind of market growth is important as it is based on positive personal experience.
Positive work culture
The heart of great work culture is “Communication”. When the employees are clear about what is expected of them, it will boost productivity and job satisfaction, resulting in positive work culture.
Promotes transparency
Transparency generates and results in trust among employees. Trust creates an environment where people are honest and accountable. In such organizations, management trusts employees with bigger responsibility and opportunity. On the other hand, employees trust that the organization has their best interests at heart. Overall creating an environment that fosters growth.
Facilitates the growth of the organization
The growth of an organization is propelled forward by effective communication. When employees have a clear idea of the organization’s visions and goals, then the growth and innovation of the organization are inevitable.
Promotes innovation
The culture of fear is the result of employees being scared of communicating their thoughts and ideas out of fear of being rejected. In such cases, they are likely to become stagnant in their roles and thought the process leading to only minimal contribution. However, if there is an open and honest line of communication between supervisors and staff members, they are encouraged to be more creative and innovative within the workplace, and they are likely to put forth new and creative ideas resulting in tremendous value addition.
Risks of not having clear communication
Missed opportunities
Goals and expectations not clearly laid out result in missed opportunities. This happens in multiple forms including targets missed, inefficiency, and right talent not attracted to best-fit positions.
Misunderstandings
Another risk in a weak communication culture is that misunderstandings can take place. Misunderstandings resulting from a lack of communication can lead to some serious issues in organizations. For example, an employee might misunderstand what their responsibilities are which can impact their impact and performance in a job. Also, misunderstandings can take place between teams and departments when scope and roles are not clearly defined.
Conflict
Unnecessary conflict can certainly arise from a lack of communication. For example, a lack of communication might cause duplication of effort by multiple resources resulting in inefficiency and causing tensions in the teams. In addition, if an organization restructuring is not communicated properly it can result in employees entering a state of uncertainty and fear for their jobs.
Low morale
A lack of communication can ultimately lead to low morale. Because ineffective communication can create misunderstandings, missed opportunities, conflict, the dissemination of misinformation and mistrust, employees might just feel overall defeated. They might not be motivated to work for such a company or for such a manager who cannot communicate important matters well.
Failed project delivery
Successful project delivery is dependent critically upon excellent internal and external communication. Poor internal communication, particularly between and within project team members can affect the on-time delivery of a project, regardless of its nature. Failure to complete a project within its scheduled time frame will not only cost an organization but also negatively impact its reputation.
Conclusion
Good communication is an essential tool in achieving productivity and maintaining strong working relationships at all levels of an organization. Employers who invest time and energy into delivering clear lines of communication will rapidly build trust among employees, leading to increases in productivity, output, and morale in general. Meanwhile, employees who communicate effectively with colleagues, managers, and customers are always valuable assets to an organization.
