The Importance of Capacity
Lions have always fascinated me. Their strength, majesty, and strategic prowess are qualities that I have always admired. This admiration is the cornerstone of why I named my business the Simba Group of Companies. Simba, meaning lion in Swahili, encapsulates the essence of what I believe a business should embody. The lion's approach to hunting and survival offers profound lessons that have shaped the very foundation and strategy of my company.
When a lion looks out over the savannah, it sees hundreds of zebras, antelopes, and cobs. Yet, the lion does not chase every single one of them. Instead, it takes its time, observing the herd and singling out a vulnerable target. The lion's focus is laser-sharp; it does not waste its precious energy on every opportunity that crosses its path. If the chosen prey outruns the lion, it doesn't persist recklessly. The lion backs off, conserving its energy for the next opportune moment. This strategic conservation of resources and targeted effort is a survival technique that businesses can learn from.
In the world of business, much like in the wild, not every opportunity is worth pursuing. The key to success lies in targeting the right opportunities, assessing our capacity, and asking ourselves, "Is this for me?" Many entrepreneurs make the mistake of chasing too many goals simultaneously, leading to exhaustion and failure. This is a pitfall I have experienced firsthand with the Simba Group of Companies.
At a certain point, Simba Group expanded rapidly, taking on numerous projects and ventures. It was an exciting time, filled with potential and growth. However, it soon became apparent that we were stretching ourselves too thin. The business had outgrown the existing staff, and the strain began to show. We were doing too many things, and it started to hurt. This phase was a wake-up call that made me realize the importance of strategic focus and capacity building.

To steer the Simba Group back on track, I had to make swift and decisive changes. The first step was to rebuild our capacity. This involved not just increasing the number of staff but surrounding myself with people smarter than me—experts who brought diverse skills and perspectives to the table. By doing so, we were able to distribute the workload more effectively and approach our goals with renewed vigour and expertise.
Capacity is crucial. Without adequate resources, no venture can thrive. It's essential to know your limits and work within them while gradually expanding your capabilities. This strategic growth ensures that the business remains robust and resilient, able to adapt and overcome challenges.
The lion's way of life offers invaluable insights for entrepreneurs. By focusing on targeted opportunities, conserving energy, and building capacity, businesses can navigate the complexities of growth and success more effectively. The Simba Group of Companies is a testament to this philosophy. Our journey, inspired by the lion's strategic prowess, serves as a reminder that with careful planning and the right team, any business can rise to meet its challenges and achieve greatness.
