The Importance of Campus Architecture from the Perspective of an University Architect

As the University Architect for the past several years I am reflecting on some of the value that the campus architecture brings to the students, faculty, staff and public.?It is important to remember that the architecture is there to support the university’s goals and not necessarily overshadow the main objectives of the institution.

Campus architecture plays a crucial role in shaping the educational experience, fostering community, and enhancing the functionality of university spaces. Here are some key points highlighting its importance:

Education

Great architecture can help facilitate the education of the college students and foster relationships by creating warm, welcoming, inviting spaces that help students engage with one another.?It is important that the spaces are tailored to the specific needs of the students and their intended concentration to ensure that they can expand their knowledge in different ways.?This is true whether we are talking about undergraduates or graduate students.?The spaces we create need to inspire students to learn.?This can be done with technology, lighting, finishes, proportion and scale of spaces, and comfort. Effective architecture supports diverse learning methods, from collaborative spaces to quiet study areas. Thoughtful design incorporates natural elements, promoting well-being and productivity among students and staff.

Value

With the rising cost of higher education, it is prudent to reflect on the cost of construction.?However, more important it is vital to look at the cost of maintenance and operation of a facility after it is built.?To neglect this is a fatal error since the costs of the building are substantial after it is constructed.?This is especially true for public institutions that need to consider offering the public taxpayers a large return on their investment.?Spending taxpayer funding in manner that is not thoughtful of ongoing maintenance and operation is irresponsible.?Therefore, it is important to consider both the upfront cost of construction as well as the ongoing costs when planning new projects.

Identity

Great campus architecture needs to embody the heart and soul of the campus community.?Many colleges are founded within a historical context.?Some colleges have embraced the traditional while others have gone in a more contemporary direction.?In either case it is important that the architecture speaks to the people it serves.?Architecture creates a fantastic backdrop to the educational setting.?In many instances, architecture is seen as part of the student identity.?Take our campus for example; although our students are focused in different areas of study, they are joined together by the common fabric of the Spanish mission revival architect on which our university was founded over 100 years ago.?Although the buildings have different architectural character they all pay homage to the same historical context creating a feeling of belonging, distinctiveness and uniqueness.

Architectural design contributes to a university’s identity, reflecting its values, mission, and culture. Many campuses use architectural styles that resonate with their history and community, creating a sense of pride and belonging.

Campus

It is important to see the exterior architecture as important as the interior.?As students walk around they cannot help but be somewhat overwhelmed and impressed by some of the buildings on campus. ?Creating an architecture that allows for transparency and visibility from the outside in and inside out helps create architecture that is engaging and offers students a chance to see “education on display.”?Campus architecture can provide spaces that are engaging not only for education but for student life and student development as well.?Thinking about the campus is very important to warrant a sense of order and meaning.

Leadership

Architecture can foster leadership by providing state-of-the-art amenities that inspire the educators and the students alike.?Buildings that are transformative and break the mold provide a new milestone for other institutions to measure themselves to.?This friendly competition helps campus innovate and lead the way for new ideas and concepts.?If the architecture evokes a sense of leadership, it will also create a sense of leadership with the individuals it serves.

Connections

One thing I really love about college architecture is the many ways that it can connect students.?The architecture of a campus provides physical connections but on a deeper level, the architecture can provide invisible connections that are far more important.?For instance, the exterior campus, buildings, and spaces can connect students with contrasting concentrations and provide spaces that foster interdisciplinary associations.?Sometimes these are done purposefully but even the accidental connections can be powerful.?The idea is that the architecture helps facilitate connections to help expand the educational experience for our students. ?Although a focus on the campus identity and connections are important, it is also important to consider the connections of the outside community and how we play a role in the greater community at large (be it at the city, state, country and/or global levels). Well-planned common areas encourage interaction among students, facilitating networking and collaboration. Inclusive design ensures that all campus facilities are accessible to everyone, promoting diversity and equity.

Sustainability

No list today is complete without considering the environment.?Buildings account for a large part of our carbon footprint (as well as transportation to and from) so these are important concepts to grapple with.?As a bigger focus is put on the environment campuses are measuring, monitoring, and benchmarking where they are at today and starting to plan on how the campus will shape up and improve their carbon footprint in the future. Sustainable architecture minimizes environmental impact, with green building practices and materials that promote energy efficiency. A focus on durable materials and designs that withstand climate challenges ensures long-term usability.

Innovation

Innovation plays a very large part when it comes to campus architecture. ?For our graduates to compete in the global marketplace they need a solid foundation and hands on training in the latest technology available.?The architecture of the campus needs to reflect the latest and greatest in this highly competitive sector.?Focusing on how to do things better and engaging the stakeholders to learn what the trends are in the next several years will help keep the facilities current.?Flexibility plays a large part with innovation allowing the exterior and interior spaces to adapt to new technologies that will transform our facilities throughout their lifespan for many years to come.

Adaptability and Future-Proofing

Designing adaptable spaces allows for changes in educational methods and technologies over time. Incorporating areas for innovation and creativity prepares students for modern challenges.

Safety and Security

Campus design considers safety, with clear sight lines, well-lit pathways, and secure entry points. Buildings must be designed to facilitate easy evacuation and response to emergencies.

Connection to Nature

Integrating green areas enhances physical and mental health, providing tranquil spaces for relaxation and study. Campus landscaping can support local wildlife and biodiversity, contributing to ecological education.

Conclusion

As a University Architect, serving a large public research university, the focus on campus architecture extends beyond aesthetics; it involves creating spaces that support educational goals, foster community engagement, and ensure sustainability. Thoughtful architectural design influences not only the immediate environment but also the long-term success of the university by enhancing the student experience and preparing them for the future.

Great points Frank. When people forget connections - whether inside to out, building to environment, people to outdoors, people to people, etc. - we’re not complete.
