The Importance of Being Called the Right Name

Picture this: you check into a hotel and as soon as you step into your room, there is a welcome message on the TV screen with your name.

How lovely does that feel?

But what if you stay regularly at that hotel and, for the umpteenth time, your name is wrong on the screen?

That's what happened to a couple of regular guests in a hotel I used to work at - Mr. and Mrs. Allen, who one day called the receptionist right after checking in, quite upset that their TV screen showed the wrong name, again!

At that time I didn't really understand why they were so upset - it's just a name on a screen...

...well, I recently had a similar experience with a retail company where even though I had registered an account under my name, they kept calling me by a different one - not even close to mine!

It was frustrating and made me feel like they didn't care about me as a customer.

If you want to go the extra mile, and personalise your customer experience by using their name, make sure you're addressing them by the right name:

  1. Pronounce it right - ask your customer what's the correct way to pronounce their name if you don't know.
  2. Make sure the spelling is correct - in some cultures, names are written differently, which can lead to confusion.
  3. Don't use nicknames or shorter versions of their full names unless you get permission from the customer.
  4. Be mindful of auto-correct when you're writing emails or messages to your customers - spell-check may change the spelling of their name to a different one.

Don't underestimate the power of getting the customer's name right. It's a simple but crucial aspect of customer service that can make customers feel valued and appreciated - every detail counts when it comes to making a positive impression on your customers.

Have you ever had a positive or negative experience based on how a company addressed you by name?

I've often encountered people struggling to pronounce my first name, 'Aquib.' While it's a common experience for many, being called by the right name shows respect and acknowledgment. It's a small gesture with a big impact. #Respect #IdentityMatters

For some unknown reason it's not uncommon for people to add three extra letters to my surname - so it's not misheard, or mis-typed - it's extended!! quite infuriating. Additional letters and syllable - Worthing to Worthington!! It really does give the impression that whoever is not really paying attention to me!

Very often, my first name is misspelt. I've learned not to worry too much unless it matters (documents, finances etc). But have just opened first bank accounts for my kids, and 2 out of 3 have had errors in the set up despite having to complete full ID verification with the in branch application. And all the follow up is on me to reprove their ID and waste more time going back to the branch to sort their central shared service errors. Now that matters......
