January 2020, the world was taken by surprise by the COVID 19 Virus and we really didn’t know what to do. Countries didn’t know how to prevent it, Countries didn’t know how to cure it and countries didn’t know how to take needful precautions to stop it from spreading. Governments, Departments, Companies and Institutions are at a stalemate as at this moment as we speak as the death toll is rising across the globe and as at this moment Sri Lanka itself has recorded 50 confirm cases which could be more however this is what is documented.

Now let’s look at this incident through a VUCA scope and see what we could have, must & should be doing by analyzing the crisis. To shed some light on to the matter VUCA Stands for

·        Volatility

·        Uncertainty

·        Complexity

·        Ambiguity 

Which could also be countered by a Counter VUCA or as we call it a C-VUCA which stands for

·        Vision

·        Understanding

·        Clarity

·        Agility

Now let’s talk business,

This analysis is presented extremely on the surface level as we’re in a time of a possible country lockdown and anything that is discussed here should not be considered as a suggestion to the political leadership of the Democratic & Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. So let’s discuss the VUCA factors and see what we could learn.

Volatility = Vision

At times at this spending time to analyze the situation through data will paint a proper picture in order to predict various outcomes which are mostly hiding in plain sight. And through such planned surprise deployment we could’ve easily avoided individuals escaping quarantine and entering the country. Thus the importance of Vision at time of Volatility is most important.

Uncertainty = Understanding 

Countering variables that are in plain site should be done with accuracy in data and maybe taken behavioral precautions may have helped Understand the Uncertainties in any situations through and accurate data calculation and behavior analysis could determine many positive preventive actions which will meet minimum resistance.

Complexity = Clarity

Complexity occurs when people are unaware of what to do, if there was a SOP “Standard Operating Procedure” which is a clear documented procedure circulated educating the general public in case of a crisis the quarantine is run in which form of way apart from along with where they will be quarantined duration and the process of the quarantine along with the purpose people may respond to quarantine effort positively.

Ambiguity = Agility 

On ground staff who are dealing with the situation at points of contacts should be able to make needful decisions in order to better the situation with a close monitoring process and should at all times be kept in a position of rank that they should feel and be capable of making a judgment call if and when necessary.

Conclusion

·        As discussed above it is only when people we envision the future regardless of the fact that the country could be effected by the pandemic or not if as a nation we took a head start in preparing the public for the chaos and been proactive about it along with been disciplined to follow emergency instructions we could’ve had more readiness in the country towards the pandemic.

·        Having a proper analyzed strategy towards employed citizens coming in to the country and drive decisions through data will give a much more suitable decision which may not be the most popular but which might end up the most effective. At uncertain times should be countered through understanding the variables and behavior analysis of the demographic.

·        Complexity should be countered by effective communication through all spectrums and be delivered as instructions from the leadership to the public where they most seek guidance at dire times from the country’s leaders. And they shall be clear, specific and actionable. And a documented set of SOP’s for the country to follow. 

·        Having the ability to shift the process to fit the situation is an absolutely essential factor where people, workers and administrators could fine-tune and implement in parallel with a great understanding of the threat matrix of the situation.

And hence the public and the administrators of Sri Lanka been VUCA – Pro could help us counter any future pandemics.
