The Importance of Art in the Design/ Build Equation

Recently I wrote an article for LA Design, the official magazine of the American Society of Interior Designers. It was entitled "The Importance of Art in the Design/Build Equation". As an Art Consultant and Online Gallerist trying to work with both the buyers and sellers of fine art, I often hear from designers that their clients do not want to spend any significant amount of money on fine art, yet it is art that gives a room it's heart, sets the tone for the ambiance, and personalizes the environment.

If you are an interior designer or architect you understand the importance of art, but often, trying to create enthusiasm in your clients can be challenging unless you know how to go about it. I always try to learn much as I can about someone before suggesting art to them, including what kind of ambience they want in their home. Do they want people to feel excited and energized, or are they looking for something that will provide a calm Zen atmosphere? Perhaps they love edgy contemporary work, in which case Pop Surrealism could be the genre you need, or maybe they have a post-modern home, making Geometric Abstraction the perfect fit.

But, art is also much more than decor. Collecting art can be a passion, when you just "have to have it", an adventure where you delight in art shows and enjoy the delight of discovery, or an investment in blue-chip art that can put your children through college. Whatever the reason, having an expert to guide you through the enormity of the contemporary art market can be a huge help.
