The data used to train machine learning models is foundational to how the AI system will perform. Biased or low-quality training data can lead to discriminatory or ineffective outputs. A key area of concern is ensuring training data is representative and inclusive across different demographics like race, gender, age, etc. Many datasets reflect societal biases and under-represent certain groups. For example, image recognition models trained primarily on pictures of white individuals may have higher error rates for other ethnicities.

It’s critical to audit training data for these imbalances and other issues, such as offensive language, disinformation, copyright violations, or low-quality inputs. Techniques like data augmentation and sampling methods can expand datasets and reduce biases.

Contextual information about the data’s origins, how it was collected/annotated, and any known limitations should also be documented. This data provenance allows data scientists to understand better and mitigate potential skews. Monitoring model outputs for signs of bias and regularly retraining on new, high-quality data is key for maintaining fair and accurate AI over time.

Privacy and Security

Many of the most compelling AI use cases involve processing large amounts of personal data, such as texts, images, audio, and video. AI developers must have strong data governance and security practices for obtaining, managing, and protecting this sensitive information.

From a governance perspective, only the data required for the AI’s intended use should be collected through proper user consent and disclosures. Access controls and auditability measures are needed so data isn’t misused. Privacy-preserving techniques like differential privacy, federated learning, and homomorphic encryption can enable AI training with encrypted data. Robust cybersecurity is paramount, as AI systems processing personal data are an enticing target for hackers. This includes encryption, access controls, AI model vulnerability testing, secure software development practices, breach monitoring, and incidence response plans.

There should also be transparency with users on what personal data was used to build the AI, what it’s capable of processing, and any foreseeable privacy risks, like potential inadvertent exposures of sensitive data within training datasets.

As AI capabilities grow, privacy protections and security practices must keep pace to maintain public trust in these transformative technologies.

Upholding AI Ethics Supports UN Sustainable Development Goals:

Ensuring ethical practices around the development and use of AI is critically intertwined with achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs represent a “blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all” by addressing global challenges like poverty, inequality, environmental degradation, and more.

Several of the 17 SDGs have clear connections to responsible AI:

Goal 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure AI innovation should be pursued to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive industrialization, and foster innovation that benefits all segments of society.

Goal 10—Reduced Inequalities AI algorithms and datasets must be audited for biases to avoid discriminating against or marginalizing already underrepresented and vulnerable groups.

Goal 16—Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions Robust governance frameworks and the rule of law around AI must be established to promote accountability, ethical behavior, and stable, just institutions.

Other SDGs, such as Quality Education, Gender Equality, Decent Work, and Sustainable Cities, also involve upholding AI ethics. For example, AI powering recruitment or financial systems should avoid perpetuating gender biases, while urban AI applications should be geared toward inclusive, accessible, and environmentally friendly outcomes.

The UN states that the SDGs are “an urgent call for action” that requires “global partnership.” AI will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in that partnership and in facilitating the SDGs. However, the responsible development of these transformative technologies in line with established ethical principles like those outlined here will be paramount.

Social Impact The development and use of AI should be aligned with benefiting humanity and the greater good. We must carefully consider the potential social implications of AI applications, including societal disruptions from AI-driven automation and job displacement.

Some examples of ethical AI deployment:

  • Healthcare AI models that were rigorously tested for racial and gender biases in diagnosing diseases
  • AI-powered recruitment tools with audits to remove bias and ensure compliance with fair hiring laws
  • Content moderation AI that is transparent about what data was used for training and its capabilities/limitations
  • Autonomous vehicles with well-defined failsafe mechanisms and clear accountability policies around accidents
  • AI assistants with solid privacy safeguards and the ability for humans to understand how outputs are generated

As the AI revolution progresses, prioritizing ethical development and deployment will be essential to ensuring these technologies are a reliable force for good that upholds human rights and achieves the UN’s ambitious vision for the future. Companies, governments, researchers, and citizens all have a role to play in upholding AI ethics.
