The Importance of Adaptability and Resilience in Today World

The World Economic Form WEF identified the 10 most critical skills for success in 2023 and beyond. Number 3 came ‘Adaptability, Agility and Flexibility’.

Now, the question why adaptability. Because we live in a world that is descried as a VUCA world. The word VUCA stands for: Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous. Which means we live and work in the world that is constantly changing, a world that is unpredictable, a world that is influenced and affected by many factors at the same time; and a world where we don’t have one clear explanation for trends, situations and scenarios.

To survive and thrive in this VUCA world as individuals and organization we need to have set of skills and capabilities that we enable us the deal with this new reality.

Therefore, we need to develop our own VUCA as a cure to the above VUCA. The VUCA we need stands for: Vision, Understanding, Clarity, and Adaptability/Agility. Which means as leaders, we need to have a propelling vision that motivates team members. A vision that is clearly communicate, reinforced and understood by the team members. A vision that will empower us to delivery even in times of adversities and challenges.

So first, what is adaptably? My personal definition of adaptability is: “It is a set of learnable skills and capabilities that enable us to focus on our goals, deliverables irrespective of the changing external environment. In other words, delivering our mandate regardless of the external factors.”

Personally, I believe all adaptability skills are learnable. Key adaptability skills include: Communication Skills, Grit, Resilience, Emotional Intelligence, Gratitude, Critical thing and Collaboration skills.

The question that may arise is what is are some of the benefits of ‘Adaptability’ for individuals and organizations?

Adaptability enables individuals and organizations to expect and embrace change which will lead in adopting new ideas and technology thus being pioneer in the domain. It also leads to teamwork where team members know their strengths and areas of improvements. Which means a team member won’t hesitate to ask for help and support- humility; and are ready to support – service spirit. For organizations, adaptability leads to achieving the business goads, high productivity and superior customer satisfaction. Therefore, wining in the marketplace.

Finally, I fully believe that to survive and thrive in today’s VUCA world, we need to have our VUCA vaccine. And to sustain our individual and business health, we need ‘adaptability’ tablets that will enable us to coexist with change. A phenomena that I call, in my workshops, change coexistence.
