The Importance of Accountability in Organizational Culture

Well hey there, welcome back to another Culture Junky LinkedIn Exclusive. I hope you've had a great week so far as we wrap up this Friday and make the transition to the weekend.

Today, I wanted to continue with my recent series that I started several weeks ago where we look at some of the latest statistics regarding company culture.

If you did miss out on my previous LinkedIn Exclusives in recent weeks, they're both available on my LinkedIn page. To quickly summarize, a few weeks ago, I kicked off a new series where I look at the latest company culture stats, starting with some stats about employee recognition.

Today, I want to take a look at one of the engagement statistics that really jumped out to me.

According to Gallup Research, employees who feel as though their managers hold them accountable at their jobs are 2.5 times more likely to be engaged at work.

Now, I know sometimes when we hear accountability and oftentimes a negative connotation is associated with the term. Typically when we hear accountability, the first thing many people think of is someone who makes a mistake and needs to be held accountable.

But accountability can be so much more.

Instead of viewing accountability as some metaphorical dropping of the hammer, I prefer to look at it (in some cases) much like I do coaching.

While sometimes being a leader may mean holding someone accountable in the traditional sense, other times holding someone accountable can be a teachable moment that reinforces the coaching role of leaders.

With people who are held accountable being 2.5 times more likely to be engaged at work, it’s clear just how important accountability is for engagement. Because of that, If you're able to hold team members accountable in a way that looks and feels like coaching, while still keeping them engaged, then you've cracked the code and will reap the benefits of a coachable moment, as well as the engagement that comes with accountability.

So think about that, The Culture Junky sure will.

Be good to each other out there.
