Implementing a Meter Data Analytics Solution at Energy Queensland

During a recent gathering at Australian Energy Week, Anna Collyer, Chair of the AEMC, emphasised the urgency of accelerating the smart meter rollout as a pivotal driver of Australia's energy transition.

We need many more of them than we have now, and we need them soon, and we need them to work as we hope they will: turning power into knowledge for the benefit of everyone from AEMO and distributors, through to tenants in homes without solar.

Leading up to this, on April 4, 2024, the AEMC released a draft determination and rule proposing to expedite smart meter deployment, highlighting its potential advantages for consumers and Distribution Network Service Providers (DNSPs).

In parallel,?Energy Queensland provided an update on their Meter Data Analytics solution, which has adeptly scaled to manage over 1 million NMIs with 5-minute interval data. This update, which we have highlighted in this month’s Ignition, serves as a timely prompt for energy market participants to strengthen their data platforms to accommodate the escalating volume of meter data. Such readiness is essential for empowering consumers and optimising network operations amidst this transformative period in the energy sector.

“A bit of a milestone, we hit 1M NMIs in Queensland with 5 min interval data over the weekend just gone.”?– Justin Kenny, Advanced Analytics Platform Manager, Energy Queensland

Energy Queensland’s implementation of Data Lake and Data Science capability leveraging AWS and Databricks in early 2021 had three key deliverables:

  1. A Data Science platfom aligned with Energy Queensland’s Cloud project
  2. Meter Data Analytics Solution (MDAS) designed to support 5-minute intervals
  3. Operations Upskilling ensuring Energy Queensland’s team could own the platform
